I met Bob in Albuquerque in 1983. I was a bodybuilder. Tony Brien saw me run the mile in the corporate cup and he said "you need to quit that bodybuilding and go into running" So the very next day I did. Tony was the alternate on the Irish Olympic team twice. His wife Kathleen trained our running team at Ranchers Exploration for the corporate cup. Tony trained with elite runners and Bob was one of them. Bob had a real strong presence. He was confident, very humble and kind. I remember he took 2nd overrall at the Pikes Peak half marathon ascent. That accomplishment blew me away. I ran in a few races with Bob. I remember finishing the 5K at the Allsups fall road races in Texas. We were all waiting for the half marathoners to finish. All the races finished very nicely on the track. Well here came the overrall place finisher for the half marathon finishing on the track. It was Bob. Someone next to me said "Wow, look how SMOOTH he is!" And he was super, super smooth. His foot plant and arm carriage were magic to watch. HE LOVED TO RUN. I was one of the timers on the track when Tony was working on his blood doping dissertation. The very BEST runners took part in this piece of work and Bob was one of them. Bob had run a hard 10K the day before so his legs and body were a little "shot" He came in last that day, but he ran a ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL 35 minute 10K! I remember someone made a comment on his struggling last lap and I heard him say "Pitiful!" I didn't know Bob extremely well, but the part of him I did know was very profound. I still can see him relaxed standing with his legs crossed talking to friends after a half marathon win. An ice cold bottle of Miller Genuine draft fit ABSOLUTELY perfect in his hand. His legs were WAAAY "off the charts" PHENOMENAL. I've never seen a more athletic, vascular and defined set of legs than Bob's. He was a kind soul and a GREAT athlete who showed us all how to be an EXCELLENT example, how to LOVE the sport of running and how to exude great sportsmanship. May our Lord and savior Jesus Christ bless his soul.

I worked out and competed with Bob. I'll never forget his competitive spirit and his pragmatic approach to life. Bob always had a smile on his face and had a positive outlook on life.
I will miss you and cherish the fond memories of the years we knew each other and ran together. Condolences to Bob's family. He is now running up those stairs into the sky.

Bob was an avid supporter of running and track and our New Mexico Track Club. He always had a great story to tell about other runners both famous and not-so-famous. I remember him running a 10k at the National Masters USATF Championships in Baton Rouge in 2001, dripping sweat in that very humid climate (like all the other men), finishing very well and then coming over to join other tracksters to watch more events. He was a very-present person who came to local events as well as the elite USATF events. He had a great sense of humor, a balanced look at life and is definitely missed. New Mexico lost an elite runner who represented NM well for a number of years at the national level. Bob was a gifted runner on the track as well as high altitude mountain racing (Pikes Peak, Colorado Springs, CO). Bob was equally successful in his insurance career. It was my good fortune to know Bob in both his running and insurance career. Bob will be greatly missed. My deepest condolences and prayers to the family. Larry H. Feise

Bob was my supervisor in marketing at Manuel Lujan Insurance Agency, back in the 1980's. He guided me through many learning experiences. I remember how he ran every lunch hour! Then he would come back and munch on his crackers and such while getting right back to work. He was passionate about everything he did! He helped anyone that needed a hand.

I too was an avid runner, and have known Bob ever since he was on the running scene in Albuquerque. I best remember Bob for being so very friendly to everyone. He would always come over to say hi to me and talk at the races, but after that we didn't talk - because he was so very, very far in front of me. So not only did he have a wonderful personality, but he was a great runner.
My condolences to the family, and I'm sorry for your loss. Bob will be greatly missed by the running community.
