1928 - 2015



Ruby V. Barela, age 87, a resident of Los Lunas, NM, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 29, 2015. She was a woman who loved to heal and help, "many would call her a curandera". Ruby worked for many years with the training school caring for others. In her free time she enjoyed a good game of Bingo and going to the casino. She loved preparing meals for her children and loved spending time with her family, especially her many grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her loving husband, Juan Barela; daughter, Lydia Gabaldon; parents, Horacio and Vicentia Vialpando; in-laws, Melquiadez and Maria Barela; brothers, Mike and Eloy Vialpando; sisters, Sally Orona and Longie Diaz; brothers-in-law, Antonio Barela, Melecio Barela; sisters-in-law, Amalia Torrez, Layo Barela, Presilla Gonzales.

She is survived by her children, Evaristo and Carlos Montoya, Melecio Barela, Norma, Jean, Escobar, and Jenny Barela; and sisters, Lucy Holiday, Nora Moya, Sibie Padilla, and Isabelle Gabaldon. Ruby is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and one on the way.

All services will be held at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Peralta, on Thursday, October 1st, beginning with a public viewing at 6:00 p.m., with a rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. A final viewing will begin Friday at 9:00 a.m., with a funeral mass to be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Valencia Catholic Cemetery.
