Tom Montoya Obituary

Tom Arthur Montoya

Tom Arthur Montoya was born on January 20th, 1946, in Wagon Mound, N.M. to Lucas and Eliza Montoya. He passed away on September 4, 2025 in Rio Rancho, N.M.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents and by his sisters; Amelia M. Romero, and Orlina Page; and his brothers Manuel, Felimon, and Gilbert Montoya.

Tom was a public school teacher for 36 years, first in Mora and then in Bernalillo, NM and finally, in Los Angeles, California. He truly enjoyed creating opportunities for students to succeed. One of his greatest joys was when students would ask him to write letters of recommendation for them. Tom also advocated for raising salaries and improving work conditions for teachers. He was a self-described "lifelong learner" and "world traveler" who loved watching Lobo basketball games, writing short stories and helping people.

Tom is survived by his sisters, Ernestina Olson, Delia Montoya and Lucy Weaver and her husband Charlie, as well as several beloved nieces and nephews in New Mexico and California. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at Nativity Catholic Church (October 7th, 2025 8am).
