Hans Albert Obituary

Hans Joachim Albert, of Mandeville, Louisiana, passed peacefully at Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans, Louisiana, on Tuesday, August 10, 2021 at the age of 79. He was surrounded by his loving family. Hans was born in Quedlinburg, Germany on September 2, 1941 to Günter and Elisabeth Albert. After immigrating to the United States in 1961, he lived in New York City and worked on the Chrysler Building as a welder. His desire to be an aviator drew him to enlist in the United States Army where he flew helicopters and attained the rank of warrant officer. Hans served in Vietnam from 1962-1969 and received several awards, most notably the Purple Heart distinction for bravery. Hans became a proud United States citizen in Montgomery, Alabama in 1969. After his military service, Hans worked as a commercial helicopter pilot flying locally and abroad. In the 1980s, he completed the Penn State Executive Program and began an exciting career as an international corporate executive in the helicopter industry. Hans retired after almost 50 rewarding years in the field. Hans is preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Carl Schafer. He is survived by his devoted wife of 29 years, Virginia Faith Albert, his children, Anya Lucas (Tyger), Max Albert, Katie Cordes (Brett), and Liz Hebert (Glenn), his loving grandchildren, Kara and Kona Lucas, Ava Albert, Kevin and Alyssa Cordes, Sage, Amelie and Alex Hebert, as well Ashleigh Lucas Civitello (Theo), Crystal Lucas Pike (Thomas) (great-grandchild, Tinley), Brandy Lucas, and Tyger Lucas, Jr. He is also survived by his sister, Petra Schafer, Gretchen O'Neal, his former spouse and the mother of his children, his sister- in- law, Joyce Leece, brothers-in-law, Robert Stockstill (Sharon) and Niel Stockstill (Lavonne) and many nieces and nephews. Hans traveled the world and had many fascinating incites to share. His enthusiasm for sailing brought him to Lake Pontchartrain, where he made many wonderful friends and served as a past board of director for the Pontchartrain Yacht Club. Hans was a compassionate person with an endless curiosity and passion for knowledge. Above all, his greatest love was spending time at home with his family and being a doting Opa. He always took the time to hear about what was new with each person in his life, and he will truly be missed. Ruhe in Frieden.

I can honestly say from all of us that Hans (Jochen) was a very dear friend and we are blessed to have known him. My last contact with him was when he came to visit my father one last time when my Dad was on hospice. It meant so much to us and especially to my Mom. He spoke to my Dad and I´m sure he heard him. It´s so unbelievable that we are now mourning Jochen. May he Rest In Peace and we send all his family love and prayers .

Henry Winther - 170th AHC

I was notified of the passing of Hans Albert as a point of contact member of the 170th Assault Helicopter Company that Hans served with as a UH-1 Helicopter Pilot way back in 1967. This is not during my time with the 170th in '70-'71, but I have been in contact with most 170th members thanks to organizing several Unit Reunions and attending many of the yearly VHPA Reunions held in locations around the United States. I must of been in contact by email as I found His photo in my archived files. My Terrible Memory is at fault if he made it in person and we met at a Reunion, I hope he did, the bond of those serving in Vietnam and in Aviation is strong no matter how long its been. Again, I am Sorry to hear of the Loss

The deepest sympathy to the family. Hans flew with the 170th Assault Company on his first tour in Vietnam. His death is a great loss to us and the United States.

I still can't believe you are gone. On Thursday you sent me a selfie, and on Tuesday you are gone. It just does not compute. You were the best uncle and godfather. Thank you for always being interested in my life, your phone calls, your patient talks with me about your own father, and your constant support throughout my life. I love you and will miss you. My comfort in all this is that you get to spend eternity with our heavenly father, your mom, and your dad - who you lost way too soon, and my dad. That gives me peace. Until we meet again, Uncle Hans, rest in infinite peace.
