James Richard "Jim" Leonard

1945 - 2024

James Richard Leonard ("Jim") a loving husband, devoted father, and cherished grandfather passed away on March 19, 2024, at the age of 79. His life was a testament to his unwavering commitment to family, friends, and the outdoors. Born in 1945 to James R. Leonard Sr. and Margaret I. Leonard in Redlands, Ca. Jim started on a journey surfing the Southern California coastline before attending Tulane for undergraduate and Law Schools. During his time in New Orleans, he developed a deep love for his wife Kathy and Southern Louisiana. After graduating Jim and his new family moved to Lafayette where he served as a Captain in the U.S. Army reserves prior to establishing his law practice of 50 years at McBride, Forest, Rozas, and Leonard. Outside the courtroom, Jim found joy in nature's embrace. His passion for nature extended to his pursuits as an iris grower, citrus and blueberry farmer. He ultimately served as the President of the Society for Louisiana Iris with patience and care. Above all else, Jim was a devoted family man. He found his greatest joy in the love and companionship of his beloved wife, children, and grandchildren. His unwavering support, boundless love, and wisdom enriched the lives of his family, leaving a legacy of love and devotion that will endure the test of time. In his leisure time, Jim could often be found casting his line into the waters around Dulac and Grand Isle. Where his passion for fishing matched only by the tranquility it brought him. The times he spent on the water and walking on the beach will live on as cherished memories for those who had the pleasure of those shared moments. A celebration of Jim's life will begin with a visitation from 10:00 am on Friday, March 22, 2024, at the Delhomme's Funeral Home on Bertrand, where friends and loved ones will gather for a service at 12:30 pm to honor his memory. The family welcomes donations to Moncus Park (moncuspark.org) or the Society for Louisiana Irises as an expression of sympathy instead of flowers. Though Jim may no longer walk among us, his spirit will forever live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to call him friend, family, and mentor.
