Ray Stroup Jr. Obituary

A Memorial Service will be celebrated Wednesday, June 21, 2023, at 11:00 am at First Presbyterian Church in Lafayette, LA, for Ray Bernard Stroup, Jr., 80, who passed away June 17, 2023, at Calcutta House of Hospice of Acadiana, in Lafayette, LA from complications of dementia/Alzheimer's. Visitation will be observed on Wednesday, June 21, 2023, at 8:30 am until the time of service, at First Presbyterian Church, in Lafayette, LA. Inurnment will follow at a later date in Restland Cemetery in Dallas, Texas. Leigh Rachel, Pastor of Abbeville Presbyterian Church, Abbeville, LA will officiate. Ray Bernard Stroup, Jr., was born December 17, 1942, in Dallas, Texas and was a long-time resident of Acadiana and he grew up on many Army posts: Japan, Ft. Bragg, Ft. Benning, and Ft. Campbell. Ray graduated from Leavenworth High School, Leavenworth, Kansas and went on to attend the University of Kansas, obtaining a Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering in 1965, and the University of Texas, obtaining an MBA. Ray was an Ordnance Officer in the United States Army and served in Vietnam in 1966-67. Ray's professional career began in Tulsa, Oklahoma with Sun-Ray DX, followed by time as a management consultant for Cresap, Paget, and McCormick. The South called him back and he worked in Dallas, TX before moving to Acadiana. He moved on from LouAna Foods in Opelousas to serve as the Vice-President of Marketing at Stuller Settings - from peanut oil to jewelry. He taught Marketing courses at The University of Louisiana from 2004-2011. He was an Eagle Scout, a brown belt in karate, a runner and an ordained elder in the Presbyterian Church, USA. He was the most devoted, loving and hard working husband and father. Ray was reserved and modest, a good friend, and a good man. He had many friends and was known to never criticize others or gossip. Ray was active in his community and belonged to First Presbyterian Church, Lafayette, LA, Red Lerille's, Les Brigands de Lafitte, and the Krewe of Gabriel. He served as a Noble Duke for the Krewe of Attakapas. Ray loved The University of Kansas basketball, and University of Texas football. He was a reader, a computer whiz, and a gardener. In retirement, he served as a volunteer consultant with SCORE, Service Corps of Retired Executives. Ray is survived by his beloved wife, of 58 years, Pamela Louise Stone Stroup, of Lafayette, LA; son, Andrew Monty and his wife, Latonya Stroup, of Frisco, TX; daughter, Sally Stroup Horn, of Lafayette, LA; sister, Margaret McElroy Moriarty and her husband, Dan, of Glenwood Springs, CO; brother-in-law, Stephen and his wife, Nancy Stone, of Athens, GA; former son-in-law, Timothy Horn, of Lafayette, LA; three cousins, Chrissie Ramirez, of Houston, TX, Lois Morton, of Houston, TX, Sheila Jakubik, of Allen, TX; three grandchildren, Damian Stewart Horn, Andi Lee Horn, and Zoe Rae Stroup; one great-grandchild, Ryder James Horn and dear nieces, Wendy and Amy, and nephews, Ben and Tucker. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ray Bernard, Sr., and Evelyn Smith Stroup; his sister, Dorothy Ann Stroup; brother in-law, Michael Douglas McElroy; nephew, Michael Douglas, Jr., and friends, Mike Metzler, Fred Hamilton, Don Haight, Robin Squires, Peter Golden, Arthur Green, and Carl Bauer. The family wishes to thank Calcutta House at Hospice of Acadiana of Lafayette, LA, for the compassionate care given to Ray and his family. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Ray's name to Hospice of Acadiana, 2600 Johnston Street, Lafayette, LA, 70503-3240. Used to see Ray, especially, at church. Always a smile and a friendly greeting. His sense of humor! A fine man.
Later, after meeting Col. Stroup, I realized how much Ray was like his father.

Hi Pam, there are no words of condolence strong enough for you, I´m sure. So I´ll say, " Ray is at peace" and I know his memory will always b a blessing for you. You were a terrific couple. I loved my time at Stuller with Ray at the helm and I´m still close with most of my "gang"!
