Andrew Bodnar Obituary

Andrew Bodnar died peacefully July 28, 2010, at the Anchorage Pioneer Home.

A celebration of his life will be held from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Aug. 15 at Russian Jack Chalet.

He was born Oct. 27, 1922, in Ohio and grew up in the Hungarian neighborhood of Cleveland. He spent most of his time at gymnastics or in the woods of Rocky River Park.

He served as an Army radio man in World War II in the Philippines.

As soon as he could, he headed for more wilderness in Alaska. Graduating from the University of Alaska Fairbanks as an electrical engineer, he worked as a civil servant for the Alaska Air Command, first in Fairbanks, where most of his seven children were born. In 1962, the family made the move to Anchorage. He retired from Elmendorf AFB in Anchorage.

He loved to canoe Alaska's rivers, fish and hunt moose. He was a gymnast and encouraged all his children to be athletes, too: Bret, Lance, Mia, Dirk, Dru, Kim and Bela; his grandchildren, Andy Walker, Randy Sorenson, Reed Wilkinson, Gina Bodnar, Kevin Bodnar, Kail Bodnar, Ivory Bodnar, Axel Bodnar, Beau Bodnar and Seth Whitfield.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Gloria.

Arrangements are with Janssen's Evergreen Memorial Chapel.

I grew up down the street from the very busy Bodnar home in Nunaka Valley, Anchorage. As fellow Hungarians, my family grew to know & love the entire Bodnar family. Peace be with all of you
