Casey Shade Obituary

Casey Edwin Shade, 29, passed away on Monday, Sept. 5, 2016, in Fairbanks, Alaska. Casey was born on Jan. 8, 1987, to Harvey Jr. and Wanda Shade in Anchorage, Alaska. He graduated from West High in 2005, and afterwards played Junior A hockey for the Trail Smoke Eaters in British Columbia for three years. Casey went on to attend Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston, Mass., graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Construction Management in 2012. After college, he returned to Alaska and worked in the construction industry, successfully managing several major projects around the state. Casey was a dedicated and hard worker in every aspect of his life. During his senior year of college, he became only the 10th player in Wentworth men's ice hockey history to reach a 100-point milestone in his college career and was entered into Wentworth's Hall of Fame. Hockey was a lifelong love of Casey's; he wore his first pair of skates at the age of two. He was a quick learner and was talented at everything he pursued. Casey's second love was fishing. He loved being out on the water and always managed to catch the big ones. He was an avid fly tyer as well, a skill he learned when he was young. Casey had a great sense of humor and a gentle soul. He was a thoughtful, athletic and intelligent young man that brought joy and laughter to everyone around him. Casey's laugh, jokes and calming presence will be cherished and missed by many. Casey was preceded in death by his father, Harvey "Man Man" Shade Jr.; his grandparents, Harvey Shade Sr. and Jack and Nannie Jordan; and his uncles, Morris "Sparky" George and Carvel, August and Gordon Shade. He is survived by his mother, Wanda Shade; brother, Carvell Shade; sister, Carmell (Justin, Halle and Evan) Engebretson, all of Anchorage; and brother, Chad (Belen) Shade of Virginia Beach, Va.; grandparents, Morris and Aurora George of Clarks Point, Alaska; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. A visitation will be held on Monday, Sept. 12, 2016, between 2 p.m. - 5 p.m. at Legacy Funeral Home, Heritage Chapel at Angelus. Casey's funeral will be held at 12 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2016, at Anchorage City Church, followed by his burial at Angelus Memorial Park.

Casey was an amazing person. He was such a kind hearted man who will truly be missed. I remember he used to come over to our house almost every day with Scott Warner when they were here playing for the Trail Smoke Eaters. He was over so much that he told me to call him my billet brother, which he always will be. I will never forget him. Thoughts and prayers to Wanda and the family.

To Casey's family and friends. Our hearts go out to you at this time of such sadness. We remember him for his gentle nature and infectious smile. Casey used to come over a lot to visit his good buddy Scott Warner and we always enjoyed his company. He was a special person and will be missed by all who had the honour of knowing him.

Family and friends of Casey, as neighbours of Casey's billet family in Trail, we are saddened by his passing. He was such a nice young man, thoughtful and kind, especially to our son Ross who to this day owns and wears his TSE jersey. RIP Casey. Gone far too soon. Wanda and family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all in this time of grief. Casey was our billet during his last year with the Trail Smokeeaters. He was a great great young man and became a part of our family. We kept in touch with him but maybe not enough. He truly loved his family and friends. We thought very highly of him and were proud of his accomplishments. He worked hard to get to where he was. It is very hard to believe at he is gone but we know he will be back with Harvey and his other members of his family that left before him.

We first met Casey last fall when he came to Vt. He shared with us his love for Alaska and we spoke of hopefully exploring it with him as our guide. It wasn't in the stars for us to see Alaska through Casey's eyes, but the gifts we did receive from him are far more immense than any mountain range. He taught us a higher appreciation for kindness, generosity, and courage. We love you, Casey, and you will forever be a part of our family.
