Curtis Menard Obituary

Curtis Delbert Menard, 64, died March 3, 2009, at Mat-Su Regional Medical Center, from complications of multiple myeloma.
A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Wasilla High School with Pastor Larry Kroon of Wasilla Bible Church officiating. Pallbearers will be Curtis C. Menard, Larry Menard, and Sgt. Maj. (Ret.) Ritchie Menard; Nancy, Jim, Gabrielle, Tanner, Harrison, Sullivan, Brock, Grant, Jack, Alexandra, Jane and Charles Menard; and Lewis Bradley. Burial will take place later in the spring at the Menard homestead.
Dr. Menard was born June 16, 1944, in Detroit, Mich. He graduated from L'Anse High School in 1962, received his undergraduate degree at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wis., and graduated from Marquette University School of Dentistry, class of 1968.
He had served with Habitat for Humanity, The Alaska Railroad Board, American Legion, Salvation Army Board, and as chairman of the Multi-Use Sports Complex. He was a member of Wasilla Bible Church. He was an honorary member of the Wasilla Rotary Club, was the Wasilla Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year, and the Frontiersman Mat-Su Dentist of the year. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, flying, marathons, farming, coaching, politics and well-wishing.
His family wrote that Curt Menard was raised in L'Anse, Mich., born to June and Curtis Menard. At 15 years old, he met the love of his life, Linda. Linda and Curt moved to Milwaukee to pursue his lifelong dream of becoming a dentist. In 1968, he graduated as class president from Marquette University School of Dentistry.
He joined the U.S. Air Force and was stationed at Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage. He worked exclusively with Vietnam soldiers in preparation for the war. During that time, he learned to fly and there his love affair with planes commenced. He flew a 206, Supercub, Citabria and a PA 14.
In 1972, he purchased one of the original homesteads in the Mat-Su Valley and built the first professional building and dental office in Wasilla. He especially loved his dental contract in the village of Togiak.
Three years later, Curt lost his dominant right arm in an electrical accident. With unsurpassed determination, Curt learned to practice dentistry with his left hand. Sen. Curt Menard's public service began as a school board member. Encouraged by his experience, he ran for office and became a state legislator. By this time, he had two thriving dental offices, Palmer and Wasilla Dental Center, 33 employees, five children, and was a respected community leader and politician.
"He had a love for farming and not only bailed 55 acres of hay every summer, but enjoyed cows, chickens, turkeys, homing pigeons, pigs, horses, a cat and many dogs."
In 2001 tragedy again struck the family. Curt's son, Dr. Curtis C. Menard II, passed away in a plane crash.
Curt was diagnosed in 2003 with multiple myeloma, an aggressive and painful cancer of the bone. In 2006, in true Curt fashion, he took on the task of running and being elected Mat-Su Borough mayor. "In 2007 he went through a stem cell transplant at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance. In a selfless manner he put his community before himself and carried out his mayoral responsibilities until the very end. And if you met 'Doc' today, his hook would not be the first thing you would notice. You'd see the twinkle in his eye, feel his zest for life and compassion for his fellow man, share his love of his countryside and then, maybe, you'd notice the hook. But by then you'd be so hooked on the man, it wouldn't matter."
Survivors are his wife, Linda of Wasilla; sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Gretchen Menard of Milwaukee, Steven Menard of Wasilla, Dr. Dirk and Alicia Menard of Fairbanks; daughter and son-in-law, McKenzy and Jared Boyd of Milwaukee; daughter-in-law, Dr. Carole Menard of Wasilla; grandchildren, Brock, Grant, Jack, Alexandra, Gabrielle, Tanner, Harrison, Sullivan, Jane and Charles; father, Curtis C. Menard of L'Anse; brothers and sisters-in-law, Larry and Virgie Menard of L'Anse, Sgt. Maj. (Ret.) Ritchie and Maj. (Ret.) Joyce Menard of L'Anse, and Jim Menard of Nome; and sister, Nancy Menard of Germantown, Wis.
He was preceded in death by his mother, June Menard; and son, Curtis C. Menard II.
Memorial donations may be made to Habitat for Humanity, Mat-Su.
Arrangements are with Alaskan Heritage Memorial Chapel in Wasilla.

Dear Linda -
I use to babysit your boys when we lived in Scenic Park. You were the perfect family in my eyes. Incredible people. Curt was the person that encouraged me to go into the dental field and now I am a hygienist working in R&D for a large dental products company. One of our ditributors from Sweden knows you both (he and his wife named a daughter after you). We loved talking about how special your family is. God bless you and I still thank God that I had the oportunity to meet you and Curt.

During this time of mourning, I would like to express my sincere condolence at the loss of your loved one. May you find comfort in persistent prayers, as “the peace of God that excels all thought will guard your heart and your mental powers.” [Phil. 4:7] I certainly hope that the help God can give at this time will make a difference.

To Linda and family,
As a little girl, I remember coming to your house to play and having a great time. I used to think Dr Menard was captain hook....My mom Marty did the murals all over town and in the Wasilla office I believe. I am sorry to hear of his passing, know that we have thought of you all through out the years... Gail formerly Gailen Hildreth, Rainier WA

The one thing I will always remember about Senator Menard during my time as a legislative assistant was his friendly smile and good nature. My prayers go out to the Menard family in this difficult time.

Once in awhile, word comes of former associations & I relish the contact with my long-ago life in Wasilla. Not this time. This time it is loss and sorrow; a pillar in my memories is gone. A character, strong and impressive. Wasilla had a few really good and memorable people...Curt was one. Linda is another.

Dear Linda, you will have to reach into your memory banks to your days on Anne Circle to remember me. I was so sorry to read about Dr. Menard. He was always so kind and positive. He was a person that made you feel good about yourself (you were, too!). I was stunned in reading his obit to learn about "little" Curtis. He was such a delightful and sweet little boy (my memory of him from babysitting Bobby, Curtis, and Steven, and living next door to you). You have my heartfelt condolence and prayers for your loss.

Dear Linda and family: I am so sorry for your loss and my prayers are with you. We all remember the tiny office over LaMex we went to , he was the best and took my fear of dentist away. We were going to stop and say goodby when we left Alaska in 07, but he wasn't in. God bless you and yours. You were a good friend.

Linda,
My heartfelt sympathy for your loss. Unfortunately, I didn't know Curt; but I was lucky enough to have you grace my life. I know how much you loved him. You were there for him all along the way and I'm sure you greatly eased his journey. Please know that I am thinking of you and sending prayers to you and your family.

Dr. Menard was my dentist while I was growing up in Palmer, and he set the standard--no one else has ever come close to providing such kind care. I remember especially the Bill Cosby routines on the headphones to keep me distracted and the kiss on the forehead when it was all done. He made going to the dentist OK even for a scared 8-year-old. He was wonderful.

I am so sorry to hear about Curt's death. What a champion!

You and Curt have contributed so much to Wasilla, Mat-Su and Alaska. You are inspirations. Thank you for your support, love and attention.

This is the hardest thing, I know. I send my thoughts and prayers.

Linda and Family,

I am so sorry to hear about the loss of Curt. He was one of the nicest guys I ever met. I lost my husband a little over 2 years ago myself and found that the entire chapter 37 of Psalms as well as Revelation 21:3, 4 were encouraging to me. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Dear Linda and family,
My heart is so saddened by your loss. However, I know that in your sadness at your loss, you can also rejoice with the knowledge that you will see him again when you are called home. I first met Dr. Menard when my husband and I moved to Alaska in 1995. I was not sure about this very friendly confident Dr. who was treating my dental concerns with utmost proficiency and care. Losing an arm didn't stop your wonderful husband, father, father-in-law or grandpa. My prayers are with you as you go through this difficult time. May God in His grace comfort you and be with you in each new step you take.

I was so sorry to hear about Curt, I served on the Valdez City Council, also 2nd vice president of AML...when ever I needed help when he was in Juneau, I could always count on Curt to support us wheather it was for Valdez, or one of the Villages we were lobbying for, My Uncle is the late Bill Egan, that always gave me an in and to him it didn't matter it was just how you represented your community and who ever you were working for if it was just...He will be missed. Alaska has lost a great statesman, Respectfully Donna M. Fischer, another thing we had in common, I was born in Palmer - my family had one the 1st commerical business there, Horton's Road House...

Curt and his family were our neighbors in Anchorage. He was actively involved with not only his children but ours as well. We had sons that were the same age and as long as the Menards were in Anchorage the kids played together everyday. Curt was also the dentist for my family and he remained the families dentist even after he moved his practice to the valley. We have always been friends and Curt wil be missed by many for all his contributions to the community. Truly a great loss and our hearts go out to Linda and his family

I knew Dr. Menard for nearly 40 years. He was my childhood dentist in Anchorage and my first Little League coach. I'm one of the patients treated before and after his accident. As an adult, I ran into Dr. Menard when I was a sports reporter covering his kids in hockey, volleyball, etc., and when I was in Juneau and he was in the Legislature. Besides sports and politics, many of our conversations were about black Labs (one of ours was related to one of his). I'm glad I got to know him, and my prayers are with the Menard family as they deal with this loss. My life is better because I got to know Dr. Menard and the rest of the Menard family.

Mr. Menard was my baseball coach while I was in high school 1980-84. He was a very nice man that stressed one simple thing, positive mental attitude. He was generous with his time and very sincere. I was shocked to see he had passed away. I will never forget Mr. Menard. I only knew his son Curt when we played baseball together, I did not know the rest of his family. The world has lost a great person.

Linda and family,
My prayers are with you all. Curt had a servant's heart and an enormous one at that. His selflisness, kindness, compassion and zest for life were contagious to those he touched. I will never forget the spirited twinkle in his eye. He was a man that lived his life fully. Be blessed and strengthed by his memories and the joy they bring. May God continue to bless you richly.

Dear Linda and Family. My prayers are with you and your family. Curt was a unique individual. I am thankful for his service to our country as a veteran and his service to the community and State of Alaska, and he was a great dentist. I was a patient of his years ago and I told him that I had a high tolerance to pain medication and would need an extra shot. He told me not to worry that he would take good care of me and I can assure you that when I left his office that day I was still giggling and hadn't felt a thing..good memories

Alaska has had many spirited people to adopt Alaska as their home, some were "givers" and some were "takers". Curt Menard was one of our "givers" and Alaskans will feel the loss of his many community services. Sincere condolances to the Menard family.

My thoughts and prayers are with you at this sad time. Curt was such a warm and caring individual....I had the honor of seeing Curt recently when my son had a hockey tournment at the sports complex...it had been many years since I had seen him and it was wonderful to visit and spend a bit of time with him. I will always remember the remarkable man he was.

Linda, my thoughts are with you. My deepest and heartfelt sympathy comes with this message to you and your family. Curt was a good, good man and though you will miss him forever, you will find him with you in your heart forever as well. Ken always thought of Curt with the highest regard, and I came to share his view. Today, I think of you and the duties you face. I promise today's pain will be replaced by only warm and wonderful memories. In time, the awfulness of the battle you waged against the disease will fade behind the beautiful memories of all the wonderful times you shared. You will find those memories will only make you smile. I wish you a gentle journey from today's sadness to that place of peace.
