David Jones Obituary

April 12, 2017, our father, David O. Jones, passed away at home surrounded by family.
Dad started his journey 85 years ago: he was the oldest of five children; two brothers, Richard and Bob, and two sisters, Mary and Anna, whose parents, Oren and Ethel, created the Jones family. He graduated high school and, within a short time, enlisted in the United States Army. At 19, he was deployed to Korea and was part of the 17th division 3rd battalion that battled for hill 851 Heartbreak Ridge. Dad returned home and met the love of his life, Janette F. Markee. They were married on Feb. 12, 1952, and from there the adventure began. During dad's 23 years of military service, they were stationed in France and traveled to Germany, Spain and throughout the United States. He also served two tours in Vietnam. During his military career, he received two purple hearts and a bronze star. He retired from the military at Fort Richardson Alaska. Then dad went to work for the State of Alaska for the International Airport as Security, Fire and Rescue.
They raised three very independent daughters, Deonne who married James Patterson; Janelle who married Dan Nelsen; and Denise who was the artist. Enjoyed their grandchildren, Brad, Jennifer and Megan. Followed by great-grandchildren, Benjamin, Nicole, Elijah and Carson. Mom passed away in December 1986, and dad stayed close to his daughters and was deeply saddened when his youngest daughter passed away in May 2000. Dad eventually returned to Alaska, a place he and Jan fell in love with, where they loved the freedom, adventure and independent living.
Dad passed peacefully and will be greatly missed. He was a great man and all those who crossed his path, benefited from him. We love and miss you greatly, dad.

He was the last of our Uncles within my momma's generation of the Markee clan. Uncle Dave was a very strong towering figure of a man with a tender heart and smile that could melt anyone. You could look in his eyes and see the love he had for his family. Uncle Dave, you will be missed beyond words! With all my love, RIP - Give my love to Aunt Janette and my momma too.

I worked with Dave at Airport Police. I was a little envious of all the trips he took with your mom for freezer sales at Wards. Her illness and passing was tough times, but he never let it affect the way he served the state and his relationships with the guys who worked with him. While a big guy physically, his demeanor was huge. Our prayers and thoughts are with you.

I worked with Davey at Anchorage Int'l Airport. He was the quintessential supervisor; always supportive but never afraid to be critical if deserved. It was my honor to have worked with him. I will never meet a better man.
