David Renwick Obituary

Seward resident David Frederick Renwick, 59, died Dec. 15, 2006, in the Bahamas.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Fernwood, 17623 First Ave. South in Burien, Wash., followed by a gathering at the home of his sister, Marianne (1-253-529-2086).
Captain David Renwick was born March 9, 1947, in Comox, British Columbia, to Violet and Kenneth Renwick.
Captain Renwick came to Alaska as a young boy working on his grandfather's fishing boat. His career at sea spanned his lifetime. In the U.S. Coast Guard, he served on an ice breaker and later worked for a number of towing companies. He captained tugs bringing barges north to various Alaska ports and participated in the Prudhoe Bay Sea Lift.
In 1977, he moved to Seward to have more time with family and went to work for the Alaska Marine Highway. He became a marine pilot and worked throughout Western Alaska. Captain Renwick held an unlimited master's license and federal and state pilotage for Western Alaska waters.
In recent years, he went back to the tugs towing to Russia and other ports in the Far East as well as Trinidad, Egypt, Qatar and, most recently, the Bahamas.
His family wrote: "Captain Renwick will be remembered for his eclectic interests. On transPacific tows, he liked to compare his location using sextant readings with GPS. He was fascinated by Victorian architecture, planning vacations around houses, buildings or "Adams" ceilings he could view. He was an avid reader and a genius with trivia especially about movies, Hollywood and the people who worked in the film industry. He was an unparalleled cribbage player."
He is survived by his close friend, Atsuko Franklin of Puyallup, Wash.; father, Kenneth Renwick of Seattle; son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Faith Renwick of Anchorage; daughter and son-in-law, Pamela and Chris Stevens of Anchorage; daughter, Mary Elizabeth Renwick of Anchorage; grandchildren, Jamie of Nome, Victoria, Lindsey, Steven and Michael, all of Anchorage; sisters and brothers-in-law, Marianne and Paul Ebensteiner of Des Moines, Wash., and Barbra and Tom Johannsen of Federal Way, Wash.; and nieces and nephews. Although divorced, he kept in contact with his wife of 20 years, Julie Renwick of Nome.
