Donald Rogers Obituary

On Oct 9, 2019, Donald R. Rogers passed away peacefully at home in Anchorage, Alaska, at the age of 87, after a long battle with prostate cancer.
Don was born on April 7, 1932, to John Robert and Thelma Neely Rogers in
Tacoma, Wash. He graduated from the University of Puget Sound and the University of Washington School of Medicine. After his internship, he joined the Navy, attended Flight
Surgeon school and was stationed in Adak, Alaska. He especially enjoyed his time there and he found a lifelong home in Alaska. In 1967, after resigning his commission as a Lieutenant Commander and completing a Pathology residency, he moved his young family to Anchorage to set up the lab at Anchorage Community Hospital, which eventually became Alaska Regional Hospital. Don was the first Alaska State Medical
Examiner, a position he held for 27 years. He assisted in the investigation and prosecution of many high-profile homicide cases in Anchorage and was portrayed in the movie "On Frozen Ground," a film based on one particularly notorious case.
Don loved flying and was a consummate pilot. His primary flight instruction came while he was serving in the Navy. Over the years, he owned and built many airplanes, starting with his beloved black and white Cessna 180. He built a Baby Great Lakes and a Prowler Jaguar, and he owned a Cessna 185, a Cessna 337, an Aero Commander 500S, a North American SNJ (with a group of friends) and a Douglas A-26. He donated the latter to the Planes of Fame museum in Chino, California, establishing a relationship with the founders of that museum including aviation legends Ed Maloney and Steve Hinton. He worked tirelessly to help establish the Alaska Aviation Museum and spent many, many hours "hangar flying" with his friends in aviation even after he was unable to continue flying.
Don had an unquenchable thirst for knowledge and had an expert grasp of many subjects, including medicine, aviation, firearms, coins, birds, astronomy, politics, WWII history, Egyptian history, and nearly everything else he encountered. He had a great wealth of friends from every walk of life and never went anywhere without running into a friend or two.
Don and his wife, Georgia, were married in 1956 and enjoyed 63 happy years of marriage. They raised a family and traveled the world together. They have two children, Steve and Julie.
Don considered himself a pessimistic agnostic, but if he was pleasantly surprised, he was met on the other side by his parents, John and Thelma; his sister, June; and many dear friends and loved ones. He is survived by his wife, Georgia; his son, Steve
and his wife Nancy; his daughter, Julie and her husband Brad; his grandchildren, Ryan and his wife, Ashley; Lindsay and her husband, Michael; and Kevin and his wife, Lisa. He also has 8 great-grandchildren, Malcolm, Elliot, River, Reine, Ciel, Soleil, Hayden and Emmy.
Don was a one-of-a-kind individual, dearly loved and will be missed by so many, including the members of the Alaska Aviation Museum, the Russian Jack Rotary Club, the American Cancer Society, the QBs, the Alaska Gun Collectors, and the Wednesday Night Club (which meets on Thursdays).
Memorial donations may be sent to the American Cancer Society or the Alaska Aviation Museum.
A celebration of life will be held on Oct 25, 2019 at the Alaska Aviation Museum from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

A year has passed so quickly. We hope the hole in your heart from his absence is slowly healing. He was a good man and was a blessing to many he encountered. A good friend, not forgotten, but remembered kindly. Wishing him and you peace.

I am grieving as we lost one of the kindest, most decent man we all will ever know I had the privilege and great honor to be his secretary for 26 years. I considered myself extremely fortunate to have had the best job for so long. In those years I never heard him say anything negative about anyone nor anyone say anything negative about him. He was just a wonderful person loved by everyone who knew him. To Georgia, Julie, Steve and all the grandkids, my condolences to you all. I'm sure he was greeted by his parents and sister on the other side.

Don was such an amazing man, genuine, funny and so very interesting to talk to. We shared the love of guns planes history and life in general. I may have been his dogs groomer but he felt like family. I could talk to him for hours as well as my sons and husband. I will miss his smiling face and the joy he got when he checked out my saltwater aquarium for new critters. A man who will be truly missed by my family. sending love and prayers to Georgia Julie and the rest of the family.

What fond memories we have of Don and Georgia we carry since first meeting them in 1974 at the Monaghan's Telequana Tavern. He not only gave me my FAA medical but also issued the special certificate for my British ATP. As the Medical Examiner, he was "pleased to have an occasional live one." Don was always the consummate gentleman with a good sense of humor and an enquiring mind. He sponsored me into the QB's. Another good one gone west. Rest in peace. Condolences to Georgia and family.

Friend, investor, constant upbeat fellow, a lover of popcorn, plain or buttered--didn't matter. His last words to me, "I want to be missed." He is. Love and prayers to his family.

Don was one of the most generous people I have had the privilege to call a friend. His love of life and enthusiasm for everything he devoted his time to were contagious. Just a few days before he passed away, I was privileged to hear a few of the last "war stories" he got to tell from his days as the state pathologist. He will be missed and our Rotary club will not be the same without him. My deepest sympathy to his entire family on their loss.

I knew Don from Anchorage Russian Jack Rotary; Don was kind and caring toward everyone he met. He was always interesting and caring. He was a superior Doctor and took pride in his work. The world is a better place due to all the people he touched. Sincere condolences to the loved ones he leaves behind. He is waiting for a meeting.

One of a kind! The finest kind!

I remember many autopsies where humor along with serious observations made the time pass. He was an articulate foe of lung cancer, often pointing out the lung damage to a young copper who smoked. My mother considered him a friend as they shared time with the Cancer Society and he chided me endlessly about my cigarettes.

I considered him a mentor early in my career and a friend in our later years.

My condolences to his family.

Georgia and family,
I was deeply saddened when I read of Don's passing. I remember all the time that Don and I spent working together and of the numerous flight I took with him. Don was not only a Doc I worked with, but I considered him a friend. I often think of him when I see TV programs of flying down the Kenai. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you. Fred Witzleben

What a loss! He was a great person, intelligent, personable, and very nice. So sorry to hear this, but he won't have to suffer any longer. God bless his family and close friends. I once flew with him to and from Kenai, from Anchorage. Was quite a flight for me. I now live in PA but miss many old Alaskan friends.
