To Mona Lisa & family, There is an old hymn called "Standing on the Promises of God." I reflect on this verse at the time of someone's death, because it gives me the strenghth to stand on God's promise of salvation and eternal life. Peace be with you at this time.

The Broken Chain

We little knew that morning that
God was going to call your name.
In life we loved you dearly,
In death we do the same.

It broke our hearts to lose you,
you did not go alone;
for part of us went with you,
the day God called you home.
You left us peaceful memories,
your love is still our guide;
and though we cannot see you,
you are always at our side.

Our family chain is broken,
and nothing seems the same;
but as God calls us one by one,
this chain will link again.

Be Still

Be still like the grass on a melancholy summer day
Be still like desert shrub.

Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.

If you are still this promise I make, you will hear the voice of your loved one helping you along your way.

C O N D O L E N C E
To the Family of Douglas (Tommie) Smith
Beloved Husband, Father, Brother, Grandfather & Uncle
Mt. Zion Baptist Church of Anchorage
June 21, 2008 – 1pm

I will look to the hills from which cometh my help my help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth. Weeping may endure for a night but joy cometh in the morning. We know that it’s hard to accept death no matter when it comes, but we know that God does all things well and that He knows what’s best. We know that being children of God that we will see our brother again if we have made Jesus Christ the Lord & Savior of our lives. Jesus said in John 10:17, “I am the resurrection and the life. He that believeth in ME though he were dead, yet shall he live.” If there is any one who hasn’t accepted Jesus as their personal Lord & Savior for forgiveness of their sins, we urge you to accept Him today. For precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of one of His saints.

Ten children were born to the late Champion Winfield (CW) and Sadie Smith of which the oldest, C.W. passed away in Jan. 2007, twenty years after the passing of our mother. Now it’s 2008 and Tommie (as we fondly called him) has gone home to be with the Lord. Tommie was a good husband, father and a provider. During the last few years, each of us had come to know our brother as a very good hearted and loving person; someone we respected and love. He was a stickler for details and always had to have the last word. He would call once a month to check on each of us and to let us know he was thinking about us. He was a man that believed the Word of God. He was a Bible scholar. We know that he was a loving husband to his wife, Carol, who he devoted 43 years of his life taking care of and loving her. He was a good father to his only son, Eric.

To Carol and Eric, we want you to know that our prayers are with you. Look unto Jesus, for comfort. Only He can heal the hurt that you’re feeling in your hearts today. He is the only one that can fill the void in your life now. Eric, you should remember the good times that you shared with your father, and hold those memories dear in your heart, for his legacy lives on in you…his family. I know that you’re going to miss your father, but know that God is with you and that His Love for you is everlasting. Remember the teachings and example that your father set before you and live this life the way he did, with dignity and pride, leaning on Jesus. Carol, we pray that the Lord will comfort you with His peace…surround you with His love…and encourage you with His presence. The LORD is your rock, and your strength; trust Him to take you through the days ahead. He has said in His Word that He will never leave you nor forsake you. You can call upon Him in the time of sorrow and He will answer. Carol and Eric, God loves you and so do we. May our Lord Jesus Christ Himself and God our Father, who loved us and by His grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope, encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good deed and word. (2 Thess. 2:16, 17) Be encouraged and trust God.

Prayerfully submitted by the brothers and sisters of Douglas (Tommie) Smith, H.T, Donald, BJ, Joyce, Alverner (Micki), Donald, Mona Lisa, Cynthia and Crystal.
