Dwain Whitley Obituary

Anchorage resident Dwain Maxwell Whitley, 78, died May 4, 2010, at Providence Alaska Medical Center.

A service will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Fort Richardson National Cemetery, with a celebration of life afterward from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Anchorage Senior Center.

Dwain was born Sept. 5, 1931, in Dallas, S.D., to Vere Maxwell Whitley and Taletta Kulhavy Whitley. He graduated from Dallas High School and attended college in Huron, S.D.

He joined the Army in 1957 and then the Air Force, where he was a missile systems maintenance technician. He served honorably for more than 22 years. He retired in 1975.

After retiring from the military, he completed his college degree and taught for the University of Alaska and the Alaska Department of Corrections.

Dwain began his residency in Alaska in the early 1960s with his first wife, Jean, who preceded him in death.

He was affiliated with the U.S. Bowling Congress, Recycled Teenage Bowling League and Over the Hill Gang League. Dwain enjoyed participating in national bowling tournaments for many years.

He loved to fish with his good friend, Duane, travel to Hawaii, bowl and play cards with the Saturday bowling group. He also enjoyed reading, computers and having breakfast at Lily's with his longtime friend, George.

His family wrote, "Dwain was a kind man with a big heart. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends."

He is survived by his wife, Jayne Coffey-Whitley; brothers, Lloyd, Sam and Beverly, Roger, and Bruce and Rosy; sisters, Ruth and Jim Thompson, and Connie Whitley; stepchildren, D'Ava and Jim Marsh, Bob Coffey, Dick and Ruth Coffey, and Randy and Nancy Coffey; step-grandchildren, Kristina, Kylie, Ryan, Eric, Ethan, Brytnee and Joshua; step-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews including niece Sandy Haney.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Lawrence Whitley.

In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the Anchorage Senior Center, 1300 E. 19th Ave., Anchorage 99501.

Arrangements are with Legacy Funeral Home's Bragaw Chapel.
