Edgar Alger Obituary

Edgar M. Alger, 69, died Feb. 28, 2009, at Providence Alaska Medical Center.
A memorial service and celebration of life will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at ChangePoint. Pastor Dan Jarrell will officiate.
Ed was born March 12, 1939, to Russ and Ruth Alger in Masonville, N.Y.
Ed arrived in Alaska in 1960. He married and had a son, Shawn. After his military career, Ed joined the Alaska State Troopers in Palmer. In 1966, he married Sandra Aleksich and had a daughter, Rachelle. In 1967, Ed began a long and successful career with Environmental Services in the Municipality of Anchorage's Health & Human Services Department. There he met and married Dianne Terry, the love of his life.
In 1973, he enjoyed providing his expert feedback as a contractor with the Yamaha Testing Team. He was frequently seen around Anchorage decked in his motorcycle leathers that matched his bike. Some of his fondest memories are those spent snow machining with his daughter. In retirement, Ed enjoyed his passion for his favorite basketball team, the Syracuse Orange. He looked forward to watching games with his son, Shawn, and son-in-law, Brian. Ed's constant smile while traveling in the motor home with Dianne was a clear indicator of how much he loved her and their time together. Ed also enjoyed riding his bicycle, and perhaps most of all his love for animals. His volunteer activities included serving as president of the Anchorage Motor Mushers; generously giving his time to The March of Dimes, United Way, The Anchorage Spring Clean-Up and The Democratic Party.
Ed's personality was infectious. He was wonderful at making people laugh and was just as great at comforting us. Ed treated everyone with love, kindness and respect.
"Husband, Daddy and friend - we love (him) so much," his family wrote.
He is survived by his wife, Dianne Alger; children and spouses, Rachelle Alger and Brian Flynn and Shawn and Michelle Alger; step-daughter, April Scheffler; grandchildren, Jennifer, Ashley and Danielle Alger; great-grandchild, James; brother, Russ Alger; sisters, Judi Lacey and Jayne Soule; ex-wife, her husband and friends Sandi and Roy Crittenden; and many other friends and relatives.
Please consider hugging your pet and making a donation in his name to Alaska Dog & Puppy Rescue, P.O. Box 876888, Wasilla, AK 99687, or ChangePoint Alaska, 6689 ChangePoint Drive, Anchorage, AK 99518.

Dear Friends & Family. Your love, support and friendship have been amazing. I/We appreciate all of you so very much. My Daddy was something different and very special to each person in his life. I wish will all my heart that each time you see me that you'll tell me about what he was to you, over and over and over again. The hole in my heart and life will remain, new memories and experiences will grow and build around it, but it will never go away. I love him so very much, so many things about me and my personality are uniquely his traits. I am my father’s daughter. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for being his friend, making his life special and for loving and supporting us through this.

Diane and Rachelle, we are sorry for your loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. We so loved our time living next to Ed and Diane. Ed truly enriched our time at Brookstone with his caring, kind, and gentle ways. He taught us how to BBQ in our garage in the winter =) , he loved all the neighborhood animals/kids, he showed JD what a clean/well kept garage looked like, and he could fix anything. Ed is loved by all and he will be greatly missed. Our deepest sympathy on your loss.

Diane, Rachelle, Shawn and all family members you're in our prayers. Ed was a great family man, and a wonderful human being. We will miss him very much. Our lives were enriched by having him for a friend. We just saw Ed last October and had the opportunity to chat a bit, and were recipients of his famous "Bear Hug". He will be sorely missed by all. Our deepest sympathy on your loss.
