Ila Hendricks Obituary
Our beloved Mother and Granny, Ila Faye Hendricks, 84, of McAlester, died Saturday, January 2, 2016 at her home.
The family will greet friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, January 7 at Bishop Funeral Service.
A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, January 8 at Bishop Chapel of Memories with Pastor Terren Anderson officiating. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Mrs. Hendricks grandsons.
She was born October 7, 1931 in Houlka, Mississippi to Robert Franklin and Mandy Vinnie Mooneyham. She was raised in Bruce, Mississippi among a large family of ten brothers and sisters. In her early 20's, she moved to McAlester where she later met then married her husband Junior "JL" Hendricks. They were married in Fort Smith, Arkansas on August 9, 1952. They were married 54 years until his death in 2007.
They resided in Portland, Oregon and San Diego, California during his time of military service. They subsequently returned to Oklahoma with McAlester being their long term home.
She worked briefly at the Navy Ammunition Depot, then many years as a seamstress at Elsings and Komar plants. Her last and favorite job was working in her son's grocery store, Johnny's "A" Street Market, working in the meat department. She worked there for 10 years until her health began to fail.
During her young adult life, she enjoyed fishing and going to the lakes for outings and camping. She was active and supportive in her children's and grandchildren's school and sporting endeavors. She was an excellent bowler for many years, winning many tournaments and trophies. She liked gardening and casinos, but loved Texas Ranger baseball and OU football.
Her biggest joy in life was family. She was a wonderful cook and loved to cook for holidays and family gatherings, big or small.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law: Sherry and Danny Giacomo of McAlester, Kim and David Horan of Hughesville, PA; sons and daughters-in-law: Tony and Jackie Hendricks of Norman, Johnny and Trish Hendricks of Tannehill, Jimmy and Milene Hendricks, of Wilburton.
Also, grandchildren: Ian Leybas, Brian Giacomo, Shannon Giacomo, Amber Light, Heather Hendricks, Kyle Hendricks, Tanya Hendricks, Brandi Mathis, Darryl Beauchamp, Kelly Culberson, Josh Hendricks, Adam Hendricks, Chris Horan, Hayden Horan, and Matthew Horan; 25 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, sisters, and brothers.
