James Rigsbee Obituary

James Edward Rigsbee Jr., 94, passed away peacefully on Oct. 18, 2014, at Providence Hospital surrounded by four generations of family. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, Oct. 25, 2014, at 2 p.m., at Legacy Funeral Home, located at Heritage Chapel at Angelus at 440 East Klatt Road. Interment will be in the spring. He was born on Jan. 7, 1920, to James Edward Rigsbee and Lucille Horton in Waukegan, Ill., moving to Iraan, Texas, in 1921. He was a state champion mile runner and played French Horn in the band. Also an Eagle Scout, he attended the first Jamboree in 1936 in Washington, D.C., taking 100 horned toads to barter. He attended another Jamboree in 1984! He studied civil engineering in college until he was drafted into the Army in World War II. He was a radio operator when he came to Alaska, where he was stationed on Amchitka Island. He returned to Anchorage, Alaska, at the end of World War II. He met and married Alberta Elizabeth Bigelow in Palmer, Alaska, in 1950. They were partners in life, love and business for over 56 years. They built a home on 20th and Borealis Drive where they raised kids, flowers, apple trees and lilacs. They started many businesses through the years including Cost Plus 1953-1964 and Inlet Rug Svc 1951-2008. James was a Teamster Surveyor on the North Slope and a Master carpet installer and an inventor of tools of the trade. He mentored many generations of family and friends. A very devoted family man. He helped fulfill many dreams of his children and grandchildren. Alberta passed way in 2005. Jim continued to work until he retired, living with his daughter Stacey and her family until his passing. He is survived by his daughters, Melaney Rogers and Stacey Boucher; grandchildren, Crystal Stryken, Sol Rogers, Elizabeth Rogers, Genevieve Dunyon and Phillipe and Sean Boucher; great-grandchildren, William, Asa and Phoenix Stryken, Haley and Chelsea Rogers, Andrew Green, Blainey, Jayden, Sienna, Cyprus and Kira Dunyon, Serena and Eliana Sandvik, Alex, Yuviana and Antonio Boucher; and his caregiver, Amber Mucha; and Nan and Jerry. His family said: "He left us a legacy of respect, responsibility, compassion, generosity, hard work, humor, creativity, adventure and open mindedness. The family came first, stayed together and took care of our own!" Services have been entrusted to Legacy Funeral Home, Heritage Chapel at Angelus. Flowers and donations will be welcome.

In the late 1960's, when I was about nine years old, I trudged through deep snow in my neighborhood on a cold winter's eve, selling girlscout cookies door-to-door. Times were different then, but I was by myself, and after going to many doors was lucky for anyone to buy even one box. When I got to the pink house on Borealis Street close to my house, I remember the nicest man home with his daughter, and he invited me in to get warm. I stood at the entrance of his home feeling thankful for such a kind gesture. He had a warm smile and a nice chuckle, as I recall. I was so happy that I was going to sell a box of cookies, but he bought not one box, but two. Mr. Rigsbee was the only person to invite me in to warm up that evening with his family, and the only person to buy two boxes of girlscout cookies. 40+ years later, I can never drive through my old neighborhood without seeing his house, and remembering his kind and warm heart on that very cold evening. Jim and Alberta welcomed me into their home when I arrived, hardly speaking any English and were family ever after. They extended their love to me and my family and were the most loving, generous people I've ever known. We will miss Jim, who was like a father and best friend! Our condolences to Stacey, Laney and all of the grandchildren. We love you guys.

Jimmy and Alberta were good friends for many years. One year I thought his birthday was the same as mine so I made him a birthday cake and took it to the house. Boy was I embarrassed when I found out that I had the right day but the wrong month! We had a good laugh and he got two birthday's that year! I am sorry for your loss, he will always live in our hearts. Trudy Kirkendall

I have a fond memory of Jimmy taking me with him to the recycling center. It was a beautiful sunny day. I was 5 yrs. old and I felt so special because he chose me to ride with him. He was a good man. I am so sorry for your loss.

To his loving family,
God took a wonderful and caring man from our lives. But don't cry for him because his eyes shine bright again and the smile on his face is bigger than ever. James is without pain, at peace and back with the love of his life to fill a new job.
James and Alberta, hand in hand, sit together now, inside the gates of Heaven and welcome all that enter.
On this earth James and Alberta made everyone they met a part of their family. We were one of the lucky (many) who felt that awesome warmth and loving nature. You are missed deeply by me, my entire family and all who knew you.

STACEY & FAMILY,
I am so sorry for your loss. I know you will miss POPPO so much, but know that he no longer suffers in his heavenly home. Take comfort in knowing that now you have a special guardian angel to watch over you. -
