Jean Bates Obituary

Long time Alaska resident Jean Paton Bates, 76, passed away peacefully in her home in Palmer, Alaska, on the afternoon of April 15, 2015, surrounded by family. Jean was born at the dawn of World War II on Feb. 17, 1939, in Edinburgh, Scotland, to William McCauley and Annie Shannon. The oldest sister of seven siblings, Jean was the primary caretaker and supporter of her family during post-war hardships. She graduated from St. Anthony's Secondary School in 1955, and soon thereafter, moved overseas to California, to pursue a career in nursing while starting a family life of her own. Jean loved to travel as it gave her a great sense of freedom while growing her passion for diverse cultures and the arts. From 1960 to 1973, Jean adventured through several states with her family, including California, Minnesota, Oregon, Washington, and eventually to Girdwood, Alaska, where she was instantly captivated by its mountain ranges. Her friends in Girdwood remember Jean as a positive and uplifting personality, full of color and optimism. She dedicated her life to opening her home to loved ones and lending an ear to those that needed it. For 40 years with her husband, Charles, Jean enjoyed gardening, cooking, fishing, taking long hiking trips, sewing, playing her cello and exploring Alaska's beauty first-hand with her family. She moved to Palmer with her husband in 2012. Jean was a very active member of the recovery community throughout her life, helping hundreds of men and women battle their addictions through her experience, strength and hope. At the time of her passing, Jean had 38 years of continuous sobriety. While a true sourdough Alaskan, Jean often said that half of her heart lived in Scotland, often slipping her endearing Scottish idioms into conversation and making several trips to visit loved ones over the years. Jean was preceded in death by her brothers, William, Colin and Alan McCauley; as well as her sister, Margaret. Jean is survived by her loving husband and retired iron worker, Charles "Bill" Bates; brother, David McCauley; sister, Kathy McCauley; daughters, Lisa Vandelac and Coleen Harrier; sons, Gary Vandelac, Michael Vandelac and JJ Harrier. She is also a beloved Nana to eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Jean's family will be hosting a Celebration of Life and Potluck for friends and family at the Bates' residence, 1187 Vroman Drive in Palmer, at noon on Sunday, May 3, 2015. Please bring a side dish and good stories to share. Contact 907-775-2886 for more details.

So sorry to hear of the passing of Aunty Jean, my heartfelt condolences to her whole family. I will remember Aunty Jean as a wonderful genuine person with a contagious laugh just like her mother Annie had before her! My fondest and earliest memory must be the tapes' that Jean would record and sent to my mother Margaret (long long before internet and when phoning was just too expensive). There would be endless minutes of Jean just blethering away telling us tales of another life in another country I thought she was so bohemian - certainly left an impression on a young girls' outlook on life! Shine on

Have just read the news with great sadness. My thoughts are with all who loved her.
I remember a few of her flying visits and of listening in to her conversations with my Mum "Maggie", her sister. I used to laugh at the way her Edinburgh accent would still be evident through-out all her Americanisation.
She was a force of nature and one of the first New Agers I met. Reading these obituaries, I was surprised to hear of her Recovery work as I am currently doing my bit in this area too.
There is a new star in the sky...

Jean, though I only met you one time, I could sense your warm soul, your caretaker nature, your gift to fill my stomach, and share a laugh and story. To your family all over this universe I feel your sadness, never forget she is always with you and I light this candle in honor of you, as you were a light on a day in my life. God Bless you, your family, may you rest in the hearts of all the souls you touched.

For I am convinced that neither death nor life nor angels nor governments nor things now here nor things to come nor powers nor height nor depth nor any other creation will be able to separate us from God's love that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Our thoughts are with you.

I will miss you dearly not only as a wonderful sister in law but as a great friend for many years. Not even the miles between us stopped your brother William and myself from sharing many fun filled days in Scotland when you visited with the family. Many happy memories to cherish. My thoughts are with you all. Love from Bonnie Scotland

My name is Tyler and I am 10 years old.Jean was my great-aunty and I am the grandson of the late Alan McCauley, Jean's younger brother.
My mom has told me lots of things about her all my life and I have seen loads of crazy photos of Auntie Jean and my grandad.I never met her myself but I know she will be happy with my grandad in heaven.
I think my Auntie would have been just like me and would have loved to have met her.

I am the niece of Jean Bates all the way from Edinburgh ,the capital city of Bonny Scotland.
I cannot express how proud I am to read the tribute of this wonderful and accomplished woman.
I always remember with great affection her visits to her younger brother,my father; Alan McCauley.
Alan and Jean were both one of a kind.Although geography kept them an ocean and a continent apart they remained close all their lives;put the two of them in one room together and you could not get a word in edge-ways.
However they are together always now, beloved siblings and the world is a duller place without them.
