Mark Hufford Obituary

Mark Allen Hufford, 40, died peacefully Jan. 26, 2011, from natural causes at his Eagle River home.

A celebration of life will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Eagle River, with a reception afterward. The family requests in lieu of flowers that a donation in Mark Hufford's name be made to Challenge Alaska.

Mark was born Sept. 19, 1970, to Gary and Joan Hufford in Washington, D.C.

Years afterward, in 1977, they moved to Eagle River, where they have lived ever since.

Mark graduated from Chugiak High School in 1989. In October 1995, Mark faced an accident that left him paraplegic and in a wheelchair for the rest of his life. Despite this tragedy, Mark was determined and received a bachelor's degree in human services from the University of Alaska Anchorage in 2000. He worked for the Division of Vocational Rehab for six years and helped people in the community overcome their disabilities.

Mark loved hand cycling and competed in the Sadler's Alaska Challenge seven times from 1999 to 2007. He won the Speedy Sourdough Award for fastest Alaskan at least two times. Hand cycling is what Mark lived for. He could often be seen training on the bike trails between Anchorage and Eagle River, always with a huge smile on his face.

Mark loved Alaska and always found great pleasure being outdoors. Some of his favorite pastimes were camping, fishing, and car rides with family and friends that simply took in the beauty of nature.

Mark was loved by the community and everyone who touched his life. He was an inspiration and a hero to many. His determination and strong will made him overcome all the obstacles that he faced, and with each and every one he had a smile on his face. There was no "mountain" too high for him to climb.

Mark is survived by his father, Gary Hufford; his mother, Joan Hufford; his sister, Teresa Knowles; his sister, Jennifer Rogers; and his niece, Makayla Hufford, all residents of Eagle River. He is also survived by his extended family in Oregon.

Mark's smile will be greatly missed by all.

I still think of Mark every so often and have fond memories of him as a coworker. He brings a smile to me when I think of him. I
Sometimes think about him when I´m out riding and about him talking about snowmobiling and riding across a lake "Doing a Hundy!" (One hundred miles per hour as he meant it). Good stuff! I hope his family and friends are healing, doing well, healthy, and blessed by Jesus.

Thinking of Mark puts a smile on my face. He is still inspiring and impacting our family by his past supports and ideas. Introducing my daughter to handcycing and emphasizing keeping on keeping on even when physically challenged. He inspired her and was such a good guy to count as a co-worker and friend. Miss his grin!

For our dear friends, the Huffords: Mark has been away now for over a year, but the effects of his life are wider than that wonderful smile of his. The brightness he brought, more than his twinkling eyes. He will always be with us. Sending each of you love and prayers, Gail

I first met Mark shortly after he completed his first Sadler’s Alaska Challenge in 1999. We were playing basketball and I asked him…When are you going to kick the tails of those out-of-state guys?
He said…Put your money where your mouth is. I said…OK. At the time, I was a little cocky and really naïve about just how hard the SAC really is.
Mark didn’t look all that intimidating to me. On a causal glance, he looked kind of skinny. In his chair, I couldn’t see that he was a pretty tall guy. He had long arms which disguised how strong he really was.
I learned how strong he was in the 2000 SUC. I wasn’t even competition. I really struggled just to finish that race. He gave me encouragement which helped a lot. We started training together after that.
The SAC has a way of pushing a person to their absolute limit, and beyond. I remember so many grueling stages in which he gave me encouragement when I felt like giving up.
We formed a strong bond. We both wanted to give the elite “out-of-stater’s” a run for the money. He used to like to say… “Jackson…we’re Team Alaska!”
Through the years, with the wind in our face, we put a lot of miles on our hand cycles. We also had a lot of good times simply enjoying life. Some people may have thought we celebrated a bit too much.
But we both shared a similar philosophy of life. Live for today, because you might not be here tomorrow.
We had so many good times. In fact, neither of us could keep from laughing out loud whenever we told the stories. I know he’s laughing right now just thinking about a few of our escapades.
Mark faced a lot of adversity, the kind that can break a person. But he pushed on through the hard times and tried to keep a good attitude.
I’m going to miss Mark’s smiling face and contagious laugh. I know he’s got heaven’s breeze in his face and he doesn’t need a handcycle anymore.

When I think of Mark A LOT of things come to mind?. The first day I saw Mark he went by my office at the Alaska club and I knew I wanted to be friends with him, and for ten years we were. He was my friend that motivated me the most. Motivated to be active, help others, be happy, and to be a better person all around. His love and happiness was so infectious. I remember the year he came in 3rd in the Challenge Alaska race. I volunteered that year and saw at the finish line. He said “Look Megan I got two checks.” That is the day I will remember the most when I think of Mark. He will always be with us in spirit.

For years I watched Mark cycle through and around Chugiak and Eagle River, and always with a smile. I finally met him in June during an overnight stay at the hospital where Mark was finishing up a three-week stay for an infection. It was the first day they allowed him to hop on his cycle. He wheeled and wheeled around the floor, while I walked, and every time he passed he smiled and made a comment. We visited alot that evening and the next day. In that short time I knew I'd met somebody very special. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family. I'm so thankful I was able to meet him!

When I pulled up in my driveway and seen the activity in your driveway next door, I just slumped down in my car seat. We are going to miss you pal … it's going to be tough this summer, standing on the deck or driveway, looking over and not having our daily chat and admiring your smiling face, positive attitude and eventually watching you pump your way out of your driveway for another training session … Thank you for being such a inspiration to all the folks you have touched … especially to my son Tyler. He looked up to you like a big brother.

Rest in Peace my friend ... so much love goes out to you and your wonderful caring family who stood by you every moment of every day. The Good Lord had a mission for you Mark and we all know it was mission accomplished in the end.

To the family of Mark Hufford,
My daughter Xenia & I were at the AK Club one day smiling and joking through our weight lifting routine. Mark spoke up and said "keep smiling ladies, that is what it's all about!" We thanked him for his encouragement even though we didn't know him. Then my daughter found out he was related to a classmate. Then we heard about his passing. We send our heartfelt condolances to all who knew and deeply loved him.
Sincerely,
Rhonda & Xenia Clodfelter

I had the privilege of knowing Mark and working with him at Voc Rehab. He always had such a great spirit, positive energy and attitude about life. As genuine Alaskan as they come. Mark and my brother were inseparable during high school and therefore he was another older brother to me until we were both living in Oregon. At that time Mark started to become a true and valued friend. The memories that remain are deep and will carry on forever. Mark's attitude towards life, overcoming challenges and happiness in general stand out above what most people in life carry. He was a true inspiration to all he met and to all he loved. Thank you Mark Hufford for sharing your life, spirit and mostly your smile. You will not be forgotten!!
To the entire Hufford family from the Frederick Family, we share your sorrow and your loss and we hold you dear to our hearts. Mark and all our great memories will live on forever. We love you.

To all the Huffords and all the Mark Hufford Fans, I send my deepest condolences. Although I knew Mark only a short time during the Midnight Sun race, he touched my life. Because Mark didn't just live life, he LOVED life. He had FUN with life. He laughed and smiled and shared his passion with everyone. The only way I can wrap my head around his passing is to assume that a spirit as bright and strong as his was needed someplace else.

Mark was loved by so many. What a gift he was to all who knew him. We will dearly miss seeing him cycling on our local trails and roads. From the time your family moved to Eagle River and he began school at Homestead Elem, I've known Mark. He was such a good and kind boy! As simple as that sounds, it is the true beauty of a child. Goodness and kindness! We sincerely offer your family our condolences.

Mark Hufford was one of the very most positive, fun and memorable guys I've met. Knew him from highschool mostly, but had seen him off and on since - and always up to something - always positive. Still rallying his truck with just his hands. Transforming into a top athlete when lesser men would have transformed into less of themselves. Seeing someone's name in the paper so much and taking pride that you know that guy is inspiring. The singular thing about Mark that defines my experiences with him though was just how damn funny he was. How fun.
As we shall keep all these memories fit to print I will leave it at FUN, happymaking and an obvious good soul. I am glad to say our lives crossed paths and my very sincerest thanks to his better friends and family for being part of such a great life. I liked the world better with Mark Hufford in it. I am certain the next world is happier having received him. Jay Skala

To the entire Hufford family. Mark was an amazing man who I was blessed to go to school with, since we were kids and then work with as an adult. He pushed me to work harder to overcome my illness and we often rode bikes together on the Highway to Anch together. (Although he always beat me.) He will always be greatly missed. I loved his friendship dearly. Kirsten Kirk

My deepest sympathy to all of Mark's family, friends and co-workers.

For the past 20 years Mark has been a neighbor and inspiration to me. As a former "Rehab Nurse" I am aware of the challenges, drive and attitude that it takes for many to simply "survive" after a spinal cord injury. Mark lived his life far beyond "survival". He lived a life far beyond what many (who have no physical challenges)even consider venturing to do.

On days that I was having a momentary pity party, I would invariably see Mark cruising at warp speed around Eagle River...and I would then get a grip and thank the Lord for Mark and the inspiration he gave me.

We recently had a long visit at Costco. Mark's (and his mother's) spirit, humor and optimism stayed with me long after our visit.

"Well done good and faithful servant" Matt 25:23.
Praying for healing for those who ache from loss, and that Mark's life will continue to inspire others,
Joan

Mark and his family were the best neighbors you could ask for. They were like an extended family and I miss Mark like a nephew. Everyone has mentioned how he loved his outdoor activities and he did - he grabbed life with both hands and wrung out all the pleasure he could. Thus the huge smile. It was so great to meet Mark as he finished another run to Anchorage and back and just sit and talk. Like someone else said, he didn't chit-chat. It was like he didn't have time for that. When you talked with Mark you Discussed things. What a wonderful mind and spirit. We were all blessed to have known him. Go for it Mark! There are no hills in heaven!

I see Mark on his bike almost everyday in the summer fall and spring. I watched the race from faibanks and always look for him. Mom you were an inseration to me also running baking goods so that he could do what he loved. I also am so thrilled that he has his leggs back and is dancing up in heaven. Lynn Henderson

Mark, it's hard for me to believe you're gone. And while we really only knew each other for the past 10 years or so, it seems I've known you for so much longer from the stories and updates your Dad used to tell for as long as I've known him. He was always so proud of you. I'll miss your spirit, energy, friendship, and zest for life. I'll regret the fishing trips we haven't taken, but I'll have great memories of the one's we had. I'm sorry we never got those river-running lessons done and I know they would have been a blast. But, it seemed our schedules never worked out and there was always time later... I've raised a glass or two to you my friend. You were an inspiration and I will miss you. Gary, Joanie, Teresa, Jen... I don't have the proper words to express how sorry I am for your loss. I will always remember Mark and my brother doing what teenage boys do! Skiing, skating, partying, fishing, camping...

This poem was given to me when Jason passed and I wanted to share it with you. It is so true! Mark will always be with you, everywhere you go, and in everything you do, memories of his life and his love will come to you!!
~~~~~~~~~
Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die.
Mark- you were the best brother a sister could ask for. You will always be my hero- your determination and courage is what is keeping me strong. Everything you fought through, you fought with a smile on your face, and I promise to keep that smile alive everyday that I live. You will never be forgotten brother but you sure will be missed. I am honored to have had you in my life as long as I had- you tought me so much and I promise to live my life like you lived yours. I wish you could see how much the community of Eagle River has come together to honor you- you inspired everyone you ever met and I promise we will celebrate your life to the fullest. God didn't take anything way from you when you passed, I am happy to know that he gave you your legs back- so please Mark be happy for us, because we are happy for you- I want you to run around and catch your Victoria Secret Models that you always wanted:) For me to know you have your legs back gives me peace and lets me know everything will be okay with time. I want you to run free like you have never ran before- you deserve the best bro, and yes I am going to miss you, but I am going to carry your strength that you showed everyone on. Each day is going to be a day to do something that Mark wanted to do- I am going to run your race for you this summer, and when we get the bike trail in your name, I promise I will be out there everyday. I love you bro- thank you so much for everything you have done, and thank you for touching so many hearts- I promise to keep the family strong and take care of them- please don't worry about us, we are all at peace knowing you have everything you have every wanted. God is taking care of you and we will all see you soon- this is not a good bye, it's a "see you later" and when we do, you better be ready for the biggest hug and kiss a sister could give. I LOVE YOU BRO...I LOVE YOU, I LOVE YOU, I LOVE YOU!!!!!!
Love always and never forgotten,
I'm saddened to read of Mark's untimely passing. We met while taking classes in Eagle River, and I always enjoyed visiting with him. He had great wit, a "take no prisoners" attitude, and a brilliant smile! I knew Mark as a coworker, but sometimes when we saw each other, we did spend time together talking about shared interests and having lunch. He and I chatted about some of the more meaningful things in his life, such as relationships with friends, with Jesus....and some not so deep things, such as women and snowmobiling. I always remember (nearly every time I ride) him saying about snowmobiling that he loved it and that he enjoyed: "doing a hundy" on his machine (a hundred miles per hour that is). He loved a healthy thrill. I liked that about him. I was inspired by his motivation to be what he wanted to be and to live the life he dreamed of. My condolences and prayers for his family and friends. I'll think of him when I go riding!
