Maurice Mitchell Obituary

Maurice Tyrone Mitchell, 48, died Jan. 19, 2011, at the Kensington Mine in Juneau.

A celebration of life was Tuesday at Lighthouse Christian Fellowship. Burial took place after the service at Anchorage City Memorial Park.

Maurice Mitchell was born June 12, 1962, in Salisbury, N.C., to Wayland "Mitch" and Earnestine Mitchell and grew up across the globe as a military child.

He was a star football and track athlete for Bartlett High School (graduated in 1980), a Sacramento City College student-athlete (1980-1982) and in 2009 was inducted into the Sacramento City College Hall of Fame. He married Theresa Mitchell (Spagnolo) in 1983 and they had three daughters.

Maurice worked in the mining industry throughout Alaska since 1988 and recently worked as a warehouse manager at the Kensington Mine in Juneau.

Some of the many things Maurice enjoyed were family dinners, playing and watching his beloved football, playing with his grandchildren, attending the many sports events of his daughters and nephews, playing poker with family and friends, and vacationing in Las Vegas and Hawaii with his wife.

His family reflects that: "Maurice was a loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was one of the kindest, most gentle 'big men' anyone had ever met. His love for family consumed his very being. Maurice's smile and energetic personality would light up the room and his favorite pastime was playing with his grandchildren."

He is survived by his wife, Theresa Mitchell; daughter and son-in-law, Talia and Jason Robinson; daughter and son-in-law, Trista and Joseph Wilson III; daughter, Tiana Mitchell; granddaughters, Gabrielle and Sophia Robinson; grandson, Ari Wilson; father and mother, Wayland "Mitch" and Earnestine Mitchell of Anchorage; brother and sister-in-law, Raymond and Angela Mitchell of Clovis, Calif., and their sons, Trey and Tevin Mitchell; sister and brother-in-law, Yolanda Mitchell-Brown and Gerald Brown of Seattle, and their son, Isiah Brown; and other family members including Chante Mitchell; great-aunts Katie Tillman and Iola Harrington; uncles and cousins and members of his extended Mitchell and Spagnolo families.

He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Raymond E. Tinsley and Edward Mitchell; and his grandmothers, Florence Mitchell and Aurelia Tinsley.

In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be made to the Mended Little Hearts of Alaska, Leila Portell, 18350 Potter Block Circle, Anchorage 99516 or the National Kidney Foundation at www.kidneynca.org, 131 Steuart St., Suite 520, San Francisco, CA 94105

Alaska has lost a kind soul. Maurice was a joy to work with, and when things were down, he knew how to help chip away at the task and make things better. No one could ever replace that smile, or the kindness he shared. I am thankful to have had the oppurtunity to know Maurice, and I am a better person for it. Thank you Maurice for all the kindness you bestowed, and you will always be in our thoughts.

Dear Mitchell Family & Ray:
We all grew up together on the yellow hall of Bartlett High. We partied together at Green Lake and too many house parties to remember. We supported each other at sporting events. It never occurred to us that one day we would not have each other around. Although we lost contact with each other over the years, the times we spent together in our youth bind us forever. Our hearts go out to the Mitchell family and relatives. Know that we loved Maurice and that he was our friend!!

I would like to express my deepest sympathy for your lost. I know in times like these no words can take away your pain. I pray that God lifts you up and keeps you.
Maurice and I attended Bartlett High, and were team mates who spent many days and evenings laughing and joking around. He will always be remembered by his enduring smile and talking the crew of “Our gang guy” into doing the craziest things while in school!
To the family, though things are tough now, in time, all the wonderful memories of Maurice will replace all the sad memories of this time.

To the Mitchell Family,
May the peace that only God can give fill your lives. Maurice made teaching and coaching a real blessing and joy. He was a very Special, Unique and Important individual. He was not only special to his family, but to everyone he came in contact with. His special smile and humor touch our track team in a very special way. There was no one like Maurice, he was Unique and so Important to the team, to his friends and mostly to me his coach. I will never forget all of the "jokes" he pulled on me. Thank you Maurice for adding so much sunshine to my life. Your friend always,

"A Rose Beyond The Wall"

A Rose once grew
where all could see,
sheltered beside
a garden wall,
And as the days passed
swifty by,
it spread its branches, straight and tall...
One day, a beam of light
shone through
a crevice that had
opened wide~
The rose bent gently
toward its warmth
then passed beyond to the other side
Now, you who deeply
feel its loss,
be comforted~the rose blooms there~
Its beauty even greater now,
nurtured by
God's own loving care.

Especially for the Mitchell Family
