Michael LeMaitre Obituary

My dear husband Michael disappeared while participating in the Seward, Alaska, Mount Marathon Race on July 4, 2012.

Michael was born in Ogdensburg, New York September 2, 1946, to Mary and Marcel LeMaitre.

Michael arrived in Alaska in 1966, attending the University of Alaska in Fairbanks. He met the love of his life there, Peggy Oaks. They were married on March 15, 1969. They made Anchorage their home and raised their three children here.

Michael received his Doctor of Philosophy in Business Administration from Southwest University.

Michael was an adventurous person, he loved Alaska. He loved his family, the outdoors, his dogs, sailing, hiking, and participating in many community events over the years. He shared his love of water sports, cross country skiing, kayaking, sailing, and many other outdoor activities with his children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews of his extended family. He completed the Iditaski, receiving the Sportsmanship Award. He was a grief counselor for the children of 911 in Washington DC. He worked at the Family Support Center on JBER as a community readiness consultant along with being a hospice volunteer. He was involved in the Forget-Me-Not Grief Program.

Peggy and Mike built a cabin on Big Lake where they spent much of their time with their family and friends.

He is survived by his wife Peggy; his children Jon, and Michelle Lynn who live in Anchorage. His Son in law Curtis Lynn; his two grandchildren, Abbigail and Connor and another grandchild on the way. His oldest daughter MaryAnne lives in Moeb, Utah, and a large extended family.

Celebration of Life will be held at the City Church, 1301 W. 100th Ave., Anchorage, at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, July 13, 2012.

In lieu of flower donations in Michael's name may be made to the Seward Volunteer Fire Department, PO Box 832, Seward, Alaska 99664.

I just read your story and it simply blows me away. My wife and I are avid runners and understand the wants and needs of a runner. My hopes are that you will find peace and closure on this one of the hardest chapters of your life. You never give up hope... And that void may never be filled, but knowing at the age of 66 and trying to tackle this race as a racer he was focused on finishing. We sen our love and prayers.

Peggy and family,
We will continue to keep you all in our prayers. What a special man he was. He loved you all very much. His compassion he had for people was awesome, I remember how great he was taking care of his mom. I am blessed to have many great memories "Mike tales", like spending times at the lake with you all. We laughed a lot at work too, even when he scared me by putting a fake mouse tail hanging out my desk drawer. He loved to laugh and have fun. Although its been a while since Eric and I have returned to Alaska. I will miss him....we all will.

To Mike's family,
The loss of Mike has left a hole in the heart of all of his co-workers. All of us have a little child inside and Mike was blessed with having more than most. His enthusiast approach to life and sense of awe at the world brightened our days at the MFSC. He cared deeply about helping others and he made the world a better place for all who knew him.
I know how much he dearly loved his family as I have heard so many wonderful stories about you all throughout the years. Mike will be remembered for his humor, compassion and the cheerfulness he showed us every day. I have been touched by Mike's joy of life and can only hope that in the days to come, I can be a little more like him. He will remain in our hearts and I will miss him.
