Patrick Cooper Obituary

Patrick "Jack" Cooper, 16, passed away on June 18, 2017 in Bird Ridge, Alaska, from a bear attack after competing in the Robert Spurr Memorial Hill Climb.
Jack came into the world as Patrick Stephen Woodward. He was a tiny fighter, cared for at the Providence Hospital NICU for two months and then by his birth family for two more months. Then he became ours: Patrick Jack-Stephen Cooper. Jack was a gift. He was a special education student whose challenges were far exceeded by his joy and excitement for life. We are all better people for the honor of having him in our lives. He will be dearly missed.
Jack was a student at East Anchorage High School, just finishing his 10th grade year. He loved the beach, the hot tub and the trampoline. He had a great basketball 3-point shot. He ran races, fished like a champion, inner-tubed at the lake and was an avid hockey fan. He loved board games like chess and Monopoly. He enjoyed beating his grandmother at Wii Bowling and being a wolf in his iPad wolf simulator game. His favorite food and drink were cheese and root beer with no ice. Jack is survived by many, including his father, David Cooper; and mother, Katrina Garner; stepmother, Rose Garner; brothers, Jesse and Jason Cooper; stepsister, Chelsea Hodgdon; stepbrothers, Matthew and Brandon Theisen; grandfather, Larry Smith; and grandmother, Jackie Smith. Jack is also survived by his birth family, including his birth parents, Steve and Jennifer Woodward; grandmothers, Nancy Sheehy and Mary Buckle; grandfather, Tom Woodward; and stepgrandmother, Joan Woodward, along with many uncles, aunts and cousins.
Jack is preceded in death by his grandparents, Jack and Judy Cooper; along with members of his birth family: grandfather, Michael Sheehy; and stepgrandfather, Bishop Buckle.
There will be a funeral service on Saturday, June 24, 2017, at Anchorage Church of Christ, 2700 Debarr Road in Anchorage, Alaska, beginning at 6 p.m. Gary Eller will be officiating the service. Memorial bequests can be made to Catholic Social Services of Alaska, the organization which helped with Jack's adoption, by visiting their website at cssalaska.org. Arrangements are with Janssen's Evergreen Memorial Chapel.

"Top o' the mornin' to ya!"
Will always make me think of Jack. That is how he would enter the classroom every morning and he would have a smile on his face. I've been Jack's History teacher at East High for the last two years, and most likely would have had him in his junior year. Jack was always ready with an answer and excited to share his thoughts. He was a hard worker and liked to put forth his best efforts.
We'll save a seat for you in U.S. History, Jack. Rest in Peace.

My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

My heart is breaking for your families, I hope you find peace in his memories, what a handsome young man.

The ache of empty arms
are no consolation to the heart ache
you experience at the loss of your beloved child.
Shattered tears and an echoing sadness
give rise to the memory of happy smiles and
reverberating laughter of special times not so long ago.
Time does not heal but
allows for distance of crushing emotions so that
one can move forward to a different kind of love and future.
