Richard Buchanan Obituary

Dr. Richard F. Buchanan left us on Thanksgiving morning, Nov. 26, 2015, at age 76, after accomplishing all that he could. Committed to public and private service, skilled in the arts of healing and medicine, Dr. Buchanan touched many lives. Intelligent, compassionate, athletic, inquisitive, fascinated by nature and history, he traveled five continents in his quest for knowledge and a desire to serve others. Dr. Buchanan grew up in a loving, extended family in Oregon. As a child he was a prankster to his sister, Jeanne Brice, and a co-conspirator with his brother, Fred. Dr. Buchanan's sense of humor never faded. Touched with good fortune, he married twice and left us his greatest achievements - his five children: Robert, Susy, Tom, Michael and Sam; six grandchildren; and his wife, Susan Buchanan. He also leaves behind professional colleague, Dr. Chuck Shannon, and fishing and hunting buddy, Bill Cowart, both close friends. When summer returns, his life will be celebrated.

Dick Buchanan will be greatly missed and will always be dear to our family. He was a guide and mentor to me from my boyhood and introduced me to the beauty of Alaskan nature. Our love for your whole family at this time.

Dick Buchanan will always hold a special place in my heart. I am blessed to have known him. On my first trip to Alaska with Michael Buchanan, I was introduced to his wonderful family and felt so welcome. Dick was always very kind to me, and such fun to be around. He introduced me to fly fishing, and gave me the experience of seeing the beauty of Alaska. Taking me and mike on some spectacular adventures in remote places. Richard Buchanan will always be an huge inspiration to me for the rest on my life.

My brother was not only the most adroit prankster I've ever known but a brilliant, compassionate, generous, human being. I am so proud of his career as a gastroenterologist, the thousands of lives he saved, his never ending search of knowledge, his droll, but hilarious sense of humor and his gentle spirit.

May God, bless and comfort the family during this time of bereavement.
Dr. Buchanan was the best doctor ever, easy to talk, too.
He was a fantastic person.

Dick was an extraordinary man, accomplished in so many different and varied areas. He truly lived the life of "a Renisance Man" and lived it to the fullest. He was the best brother-in-law ever and a man I was deeply proud to call my friend. Dick made this world a kinder and gentler place to live and we give thanks for his tremendous legacy as a servant leader. While I will continue to miss him I like so many others he touched am better off for him having come our way. RIP Dick.

How sad he has left us. The doctor and I go way back to the '70's. The last time I saw him was at Providence after my bout with pneumonia in 2002. He was easy to talk to and his humor showed through during my visits to his office. Condolences to his beautiful family.
