Richard Johnson Obituary

Richard Courtland Johnson, 56, of Anchorage, Alaska passed away at home on Easter Sunday, April 20, 2014. Richard was born in Duluth, Minnesota on April 1, 1958 to JB and Sylvia Johnson. Moving to Maryville, Tennessee in the early 1970s, Richard graduated from Everette High School in 1975 and immediately joined the Navy .

His adventurous spirit and lure of work led him to follow his Uncle Bill Morterud to Alaska in the late 1980s. Determined to live the Alaska dream, he built a beautiful log home in Wasilla. He and Karen Roberts were married and Richard became instant Dad to Karen's two kids Britni and Michael Carty and his own, Rikki in 2000 and Olivia in 2004. His children were the light of his life.

In 2007, Richard and Karen moved to Anchorage. Richard worked as Construction Manager while still finding time to play hockey year round. He had a full and blessed life in Anchorage enjoying his hockey and watching his family grow and prosper especially with the addition of three grandsons. Life changed in February of 2013 when Richard was diagnosed with a terminal brain cancer.

For 14 months, Richard fought hard, never once giving in to self pity, just a positive mind set until the end.

Richard is survived by his wife, Karen; their daughters, Rikki and Olivia; daughter and son-in-law, Britni and Matt Nevin; son, Michael Carty all of Anchorage, Alaska; grandsons, Noah, Owen and Mason, Parents JB and Sylvia Johnson.

An Alaska celebration of Richard's Life will be held in Anchorage on April 24 at 12 p.m. at the Bayshore Clubhouse officiated by Father Michael Oleksa. In lieu of flowers , the family would like donations to be made to the Richard Johnson Puck Cancer Foundation 3531 Chiniak Bay Drive, Anchorage, Alaska 99515

I worked with Richard at Martech for a few years. Being young and impressionable, he took me under his wing and taught me how to do the job correctly. One thing he said was, "Don't ask what's wrong with the job, ask what's right. Then you'll know what's wrong". I have heeded that advice over the years and use the saying when I teach others. He was a great guy and I'll never forget the time he spent mentoring me. I'm much better for knowing him.
