Richard Neubauer Obituary

Dr. Richard Neubauer, 61, longtime Anchorage physician, died Monday, October 31, 2011, at home in Stuckagain with his family by his side. He died from complications of primary amyloidosis, a disease he had struggled with for almost ten years.

Rich was born on February 11, 1950, to Sam and Gertrude Neubauer in Queens, N.Y. where he spent his childhood. He attended Cornell University and received a B.S. with honors in 1972. During his years at Cornell, he served on the staff of the Cornell Daily Sun, including one year as Managing Editor. He formed lifelong friendships at the Sun and claimed his "work at the Sun was the best education I ever received". Rich attended Yale University School of Medicine where he graduated in 1976 with AOA honors. He married Eleanor Ryan that same year after moving to Ann Arbor, Michigan, where Rich completed an internship and residency in internal medicine at the University of Michigan. He was board certified in Internal Medicine. From 1979 to 1981, Rich worked at the Indian Health Service Clinic, one year as Clinical Director, on the Wind River Reservation at Fort Washakie, WY. He loved his time serving the Arapahoe and Shoshone Nations. On the reservation Rich took up his lifelong passion for fly-fishing.

In 1981 he moved to Alaska, where he entered private practice as an internal medicine physician. After 25 years in private practice he joined the staff at Alaska Native Medical Center as Chief of Internal Medicine. From 2010-2011 he was the founder and medical director of the Providence Senior Care Center. Throughout his medical career Dr. Neubauer was a dedicated internist with great compassion for his patients and a strong commitment to ensuring access to health care for everyone. A former governor of the Alaska Chapter of the American College of Physicians (ACP), Dr. Neubauer was a member of the Board of Regents for the ACP. As a Regent he chaired the Health and Public Policy committee. Dr. Neubauer was an ardent proponent for the affordable health care act and for a patient centered approach to medicine. Rich was a recipient of the Alaska ACP Laureate Award and the National ACP Distinguished Service Award. In 2011, he was awarded the infrequently bestowed title Master of the American College of Physicians. He was also honored by UAA in 2011 with a Meritorious Service Award.

After being diagnosed and treated with a peripheral blood stem cell transplant in 2002, Rich began to incorporate his own experiences into his professional writing and speaking. In 2008 he convened a conference on the "Physician as Patient" to explore the unique benefits and challenges of this relationship. Rich's contributions to medical education in Alaska were unparalleled, and he was very active in efforts to improve the U.S. medical care system for all.

In addition to his devotion to medicine he had many hobbies and interests. His favorite activities were alpine ski racing, telemark skiing, bicycling, fly-fishing, building and flying remote control airplanes, gardening, photography, backpacking, rafting, and scuba diving. Rich was also interested in politics and was a lifelong Democrat.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Elle; his son Julian Neubauer and daughter Erin Neubauer of Vail, CO; his sister Wendy Gemus of Randolph, N.J.; and his American Field Service exchange student son Paolo Bettinelli, of Bergamo, Italy; a large extended family; and his canine companions, Pearl and Samantha.

The family wishes to thank all the doctors, nurses, colleagues, neighbors, friends and family who supported Rich during his long and courageous struggle to lead a happy, normal life in the face of a debilitating illness.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Alaska Chapter, ACP Education Fund. C/O Robert Bundtzen M.D., Alaska Chapter Governor, 9420 Southwind Cr., Anchorage, AK 99507.

A celebration of his life and vocation will be held on Saturday, November 12, at 11am in the Providence-Alaska East and West Auditoriums.

Richard was a friend and colleague at The Cornell Sun. I was immediately struck by his fine intelligence, fine character, sense of humor, and caring nature. What a great person he was, so inspiring. I learned so much from Richard in so short a time. So sorry to hear about his passing.

Dear Neubauer's, deepest sympathy for all in the family. Rich was a good doctor, father, husband, uncle, and brother. He was especially helpful during the struggle we faced when our daughter's Dad Ed was diagnosed with Corticobasal degeneration and Alzheimer's disease. With his help, caring, and generous support through the whole ordeal, was and is appreciated forever. We enjoyed our times together and HE will certainly be missed by all the lives he helped over several generations during his career caring for patients, friends, and families. Thank you all for sharing his positive, inquisitive, and out reaching personality with us.

Our deepest sympathy goes to the Neubauer Family. When we became Dr. Neubauer's patients, we immediately noticed his warm, caring and sincere nature. He was able to judge his patients well because he listened to their concerns.

We were very impressed by the web-based communication he had with his patients and friends when he was in Sloan-Kettering 10 years ago. His optimistic attitude despite difficult circumstances and physical condition were most admirable.

We were lucky to have known Rich Neubauer and to have had him as our doctor. He is an inspiration.

Rich was an important member of the community of specialists in internal medicine. I met Rich at a workshop sponsored by the Hepatitis B Foundation for primary care practitioners (PCPs). The purpose of the workshop was to develop guidelines for PCPs for the screening testing and management of hepatitis B virus infection. Rich had many excellent ideas and was a major contributor to the final recommendations and paper. All of us who met Rich will mill miss him. Our deepest condolences to his family. My deepest sympathy to Rich's family -- what a great loss. He was a compassionate doctor, good listener, superb photographer, and just a decent, kind human being.

Dear Elle, we at the Hepatitis B Foundation are devastated to hear about the loss of Rich! Although we only knew him a short amount of time, he made such a valuable contribution to our organization through his work at our PCP Workshop in 2010. And of course, my husband Tim and I thoroughly enjoyed having you and Rich at our home with Brian and Peggy McMahon. That evening was one of the most fun and memorable dinners we've hosted!! Please know that we have you and your family in our prayers and hearts. What a terrible loss to your family, but also to the rest of us who had the privilege of knowing him. He was a very bright light and will be sorely missed! Our deepest sympathies and love ... Tim and Joan Block

Rich was a great guy. I still miss him as my primary doc from years ago, but also as a humble, courageous, smart and caring person who created beautiful photographs that showed a beautiful world around us. We have suffered a huge loss.

While I may have known Dr Neubauer only as my parents' physician, I felt the vital support to my family as we dealt with last months of our folks' lives. To his family who may read this, I tell you he was a doctor who put our parents' welfare above anyone or anything. Their is no higher tribute.

Our thanks for his healing work and deeply compassionate care.

Julie and family,

May God be with you in your loss. I first met Rich when I established the chemical dependency treatment program at Providence. He was a very strong supporter of the program and was one of our rotating physicians who took care of patients. He was able to see the need for involvement of the family in the treatment process and was highly regarded by our patients and staff. Anchorage is a much better place because of his strong advocacy for good health care as well as the pursuit of justice. Thanks for sharing him with us.

My thoughts go out to Dr. Richard Neubauer's family, colleagues, patients and friends. He was one of my grandmothers favorite people, and was her physician for almost 20 years until her death in 2006. He had a way with her that put us all at ease. When she was in the hospital, dying, he asked to spend time with her privately to say goodbye. That really left an impression on me and they type of physician he was -- he really cared about his patients and their families. His presence will be greatly missed by many people in the community.

I dont have words for how sad I am for your loss, for our world's loss, for our communitry's loss. Rich was always there for me as a family friend, to help me professionally, in all ways shapes and forms, and that was because he cared, and he had faith in me, as a person, and in the future. Your family is an inspiration to me, not everyone has all such loving members such as Rich, I know I dont.

Mrs. Neubauer & Family, My husband and I were a patients of Dr. Neubauer during his private practice at PMHC. We appreciated his sincere concern for us and always felt we could trust him. When Dr. Neubauer was being treated for his illness, we communicated with him by email. We were pleasantly surprised to receive his replies, knowing he was battling ill health but still had time (and humor) to communicate with his patients. We were heartbroken when he left private practice but consoled when he assured us the doctor taking over his practice would be a wonderful addition. She is great and genuinely caring with her patients, the way Dr. Neubauer was. We will remember him with respect and admiration, forever grateful for his sincere concern and professional care. His photographs will be a constant reminder of his appreciation of life and careful observation of everything surrounding him.
God bless, Terry & Maggi Curran

We have lost another soul to the scourge of amyloidosis. On Monday, Dr. Richard Neubauer succumbed after ten years of struggle with the disease. When he returned to work after treatment, he educated Anchorage physicians about the rare disease of primary amyloidosis, and about the experience of a physician as patient. It was this generosity of spirit that made it possible for Cheryl Curtis to receive a quick diagnosis when she developed amyloidosis. And it was because of Dr. Neubauer's research and experience that we decided to seek treatment at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. He had been there and was willing to share. For that I will always be grateful to him. My condolences go out to his wife and family, and to all of his colleagues who knew him. He was a great man.
