Wilma Baird Obituary

Wilma Zieren Baird passed away, at the age of 100, on Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2016, after a brief illness. Born on June 28, 1915, in Grafton, Neb., Wilma grew up on a farm in a family of seven sisters and two brothers. A few years after high school graduation, she and a sister went off to the big city of Denver, Colo., to join another sister. One of her jobs there was working on an assembly line for Remington Arms during World War II; she told many interesting stories about life during the war years. In 1943, she married Leslie Baird of Denver. They soon made their home in Cheyenne, Wyo., where they raised their three children. Wilma occasionally worked outside the home in a variety of occupations, and she also volunteered in schools, for her church and in the community. In 1971, Les and Wilma retired to Denver, enjoying family and friends there for many years. In 2012, Wilma moved to Anchorage, Alaska, establishing her residence at Marlow Manor Assisted Living and attending St. Patrick's church. Wilma's pleasures were the simple ones: Flowers in gardens, particularly roses and peonies; big band music and dancing; a home-cooked meal, especially a fried chicken dinner; playing cards, preferably pinochle; a good cup of coffee and conversation along with it; and most of all, visits with family. Celebrating her 100th birthday was a highlight for her; she delighted in the greetings and good wishes she received from so many people who knew her. Wilma was preceded in death by her parents, Caroline and Joseph Zieren; two brothers, Raymond Zieren and "Bud" (Bernard) Zieren; four sisters, Lenore Hansen, Irene King, Ellen Voss and Florence Faughn; and her husband of 46 years, Leslie. She is survived by her children: daughter, Carol (Ron) Todd of Anchorage; daughter, Jeannette Baird of Denver; and son, Ronald (Debbie) Baird of Anchorage; four grandchildren, Kari (Todd) Skinner (Ian) and J. "Jake" Todd of Anchorage, Sarah Baird of Anchorage and Nathan Baird of Bozeman, Mont.; and two great-grandchildren, Tate Skinner and Peja Skinner. She is also survived by three sisters, Mary Garbers of Denver, Ethel Krull of Rapid City, S.D., and Francis Kamler of Geneva, Neb.; and one sister-in-law, Ellen Baird of Los Altos, Calif.; as well as many nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the kind and dedicated staff at Marlow Manor and the skilled and compassionate doctors and nurses of Providence Hospital for the care Wilma received. A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, Jan. 23, 2016, at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick's Parish, 2111 Muldoon Rd. in Anchorage, with a reception afterward in the gathering area. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Clare House, 4110 Spenard Rd.; or to the Arthritis Foundation, 615 East 82nd Ave. #104; or to any charity of choice. Local arrangements by Legacy Funeral Homes.

So sorry to hear of Wilma's passing. We were neighbors and close friends for many, many years and had many fun gatherings with her and Les even after they moved to Denver.

Wilma was so kind and sweet to me, as she trained me for my first job, at Memorial Hospital in Cheyenne, Wy. We worked together for several wonderful years, becoming great friends.
She was so generous to often make us delicious goodies. I still have her "hand written" Christmas Pie Recipe. She was a great cook!
Once I was talking about old people who were 50 (at 16 you know these things). She stopped me and asked how old I though she was. I told her I never thought about it and had no idea. I was shocked when she told me she was 48! Wilma just laughed at me, as I was trying to wiggle of that one, as I really did like her, never wanting to hurt her. That was the day I learned 50 wasn't old, as Wilma never acted or looked old in her dresses, black pumps and pretty jewelry.
One time she gave me a doll with painted brown hair, a sweet face, and eyes that closed when sleeping. I'm now over 50 myself, but I always think of dear Wilma at Christmas time, as I use that precious doll as baby Jesus, wrapped in a white sheet, in a manger that I put under my tree as a reminder that He is the greatest gift of all. Now Wilma is with Him, walking those streets of gold!
I am so happy to hear her illness was brief! Wow, she did live to be old....good for her!! I know she has left you with wonderful memories and was a blessing to many during her 100 years...she certainly was to me.
With Sympathy, Cheryl

Gary & I are so sorry for your loss.

I have very many happy memories of Aunt Wilma and Uncle Les.

I am also glad Gary was able to meet her. She was a one of a kind woman.

I hope I am as lucky to be so sharp in my senior years.

Your family is so fortunate to have had her so long! She and I agreed that we could talk easily to one another for a long time. I'm only sorry that we didn't do much of that. Love to everyone. We will be making a contribution to the Catholic Social Services refugee program in her memory. Sending love to the Todds, Skinners and your brother's family (Bairds) in Anchorage. Tom & Susie

I was blessed to be able to meet and get to know Wilma. She was a wonderful lady with lots of wonderful ideas.
At her 100th Birthday party, I told Wilma that I myself would be turning 50 just a few months later. Wilma said "Well, you'll have to have a party!" And I did. Thank you Wilma.
Love and prayers to Wilma's family also!

We loved Wilma! Thanks for sharing her with us over the years and especially during the last three years. It was an honor to participate in her 100 birthday celebration. Love to the Todds and to the Bairds. We are thinking of you and of Wilma.
