David Alan Toomey, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and servant of God, age 77, of Sweetwater, passed away unexpectedly, but peacefully, in his sleep at home, on Saturday June 17, 2023.
David was born on July 3, 1945, to CB and Nola Mae Toomey in Madisonville, Tennessee.
In 1963, he graduated from Madisonville High School. Two years later, he married Patricia Ann Lindsay, of Sweetwater, and together they raised two children, Leslie and Jonathan, in Sweetwater.
He worked as a millwright at Bowater Paper Mill, retiring from there after more than 35 years.
He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Sweetwater, where he taught Sunday School and was always the first to sign up or volunteer.
He was an avid golfer and a member of the RGA.
He often volunteered at SAMs (Sweetwater Area Ministries).
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gardening, but more than anything he loved doing things for others.
He spent his last week, doing what he loved, volunteering at SAMs and his church, tending to his garden and yard, having lunch with friends, playing golf, talking with his sisters, helping his daughter do yard work, planning a home office with his granddaughter, seeing his great-grandchildren, and having breakfast with his wife, son, and daughter-in-law.
He loved nothing more than spending time with his family, church and community, and was always there when any of them needed him.
He was preceded in death by: his parents, C.B. and Nola Toomey; brothers, Larry Toomey, and Jerry Toomey; and sister, Judy Dye.
He is survived by: his wife, Patricia Ann Toomey;
Daughter, Leslie Toomey Leinart, and son-in-law, John Leinart;
Son, Jonathan Edward Toomey, and daughter-in-law, Jody White Toomey (all of Sweetwater);
Sisters, Sandra Gibson, of Madisonville, and Sylvia Johnson, of Harrison;
Grandchildren, Summer Leinart Kohlhost and husband Derrick, Jonathan Albert Toomey and wife Julia, Melissa Dalton and husband Ian, and Keegan Toomey;
Great-grandchildren, Claire Dalton, Eden Kohlhorst, Parker Dalton, Athena Toomey, and Leia Kohlhorst.
The family received friends on Tuesday, June 20, 2023, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Kyker Funeral Homes in Sweetwater. The funeral service followed at 7 p.m. with Rev. Riley Huffstetler officiating.
