Jo Anne McClung Obituary

Our loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, Jo Anne Story McClung, of Albany Georgia, died peacefully on May 8, 2024. She was 95 years old.

Jo Anne was born in Albany Georgia on April 8, 1929, the daughter of John Everett Story and Lora Wallis Story. With one sibling, John, she grew up on a large working farm outside of Albany, attended Albany High School, then went on to graduate from Valdosta State University. She married James (Jim) Oliver McClung on April 15,1951.

Jo Anne was a remarkable woman of deep Christian faith. As a child raised during the depression, she learned to be resourceful. Watching our nation at war through the decades sparked a patriotism in her that never diminished. As a young woman, she enjoyed swimming, biking, tennis, music, reading, and spending time with her dear friends. As a working woman, Jo Anne was employed as a bank teller, a bookkeeper at the family business, and a substitute school teacher, all while raising her family. She was very active in her church and enjoyed teaching children about the Bible and God's love for them. Following Jo Anne's retirement in April 1994, she found great joy spending time with grandchildren, watching Braves baseball, and volunteering with her church. JoAnne helped with Wednesday night suppers, Bible study classes for pre-teens, leading the Just Older Youth (J.O.Y) Sunday school class, and continuing her parents' legacy of visiting shut-in members of the church. She will be remembered by family and friends as a loving, generous, bright, wise, and genuine woman who brought joy to our lives.

Jo Anne is survived by her children, Jim McClung, Jr (Lorraine) of Albany, Judy Stevens of Kennett Square PA, John McClung (Vicky) of Leesburg, Jenny Kingsbury (Peter) of Albertville AL, and Jeri McClung of Fort Walton Beach FL; she adored her seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

A visitation is scheduled at Kimbrell-Stern Funeral Home on Tuesday May 14, 2024, at 10AM EST followed by a service at 11AM EST. For those who cannot join the family in person, the service will be streamed live; connect at https://www.kimbrellstern.com/ then scroll to the bottom and click on the Facebook link.

The family wishes to acknowledge the loving care and unwavering support provided to our mother by caregivers Lucy Seay, Nettie Jones, Val Pickett, Valerie Redding, and Gail Walker as well as the Phoebe Hospice and Willson House nurses and aides and the staff at Magnolia Manor.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to First Baptist Albany's Women's Missionary Union (WMU) fund or Senior Adults fund in memory of Jo Anne McClung.
