Jerry Pounders Obituary

Jerry Wayne Pounders, 81, of Lake Charles, Louisiana, passed away unexpectedly, Tuesday,
August 17, 2021. Jerry was born March 31, 1940 in Pine Bluff, Arkansas to Carl Hollis
Pounders (1920-2007) and Lois Inez Thompson (1925-1977). He is survived by his wife of 24
years, Joyce Hebert Cormier Pounders. Jerry graduated from LaGrange High School in 1958,
and attended McNeese State University. He retired from Montel (Lyondell) in Westlake,
Louisiana. He was an avid fisherman, and spent every spare moment and his retirement years
fishing and living on Toledo Bend Lake. He adored his grandchildren and great grandchildren,
and enjoyed spending time with them whenever he could.
Jerry lived a magnificent life on Toledo Bend Lake doing what he loved every day - boating,
fishing and taking care of his yard. He was well known for his love of football, not holding back
his opinion, and his knack for outlining the latest in politics. Those that knew him well also
knew of a reserved man who never liked the limelight. He was always willing to help a
neighbor, never accepting anything in return.
He was a proud father, and will be sadly missed by his four daughters, Karen Lynn Williams
(David), Donna Marie Landry (Damon), Carla Renee Savittiere (David), and Sherry Nanette
Evans (Dave); ten grandchildren, Dustin Williams, Micah Williams, Morgan Blount, Corey
Charlet, Cara Charlet, Cassidy Evans, Grace Landry, Ella Evans, Ian Evans, David Savittiere, Jr.;
and two great grandchildren, Wyatt and Edie Williams. He is also survived by his three sisters,
Jo Ann Yelvington (Bill), Pamela Faye Sheffer, and Barbra Gail Broussard. Additionally, there
are five stepchildren; Liz Manuel (Steve), Gil Cormier (Alli), Michael Cormier, Anita Cormier,
Ronnie Cormier (Tonie); also, eleven stepgrandchildren, and numerous step-greats and step
great, great grandchildren.
His funeral service will be at 11:00 AM on Saturday, August 21, 2021 at University Baptist
Church in Lake Charles. Pastor John Astling will officiate. Burial will follow in Lacassine
Cemetery under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home of Lake Charles. Visitation will be from
5:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Friday evening in the church, and will resume on Saturday morning
from 10:00 AM until the start of the service.
The family asks that you honor Jerry by teaching a child to fish (takemefishing.org).

Jerry,
After my father passed away, my mother met and married you. You did a great job of loving and protecting her. You may have become my stepfather but for the last 24 years you were my friend and My Dad. You will be greatly missed. I will always cherish our time together. Love and miss you. Ronnie

I am lost for words. A sweet sweet man who was loved by so many. My soul weighs heavy for everyone. We will never understand the reasons to why, but God gained a soldier, we gained a beautiful angel. To my granny Joyce and my father Gil I send my love my strength and my prayers. To the rest of the family...May God give you all peace understanding and strength. Hold on to each other, love each other and know the big guy casting his rod up there with the angels.

Jerry was one of the best friends from the lake that I had the pleasure of knowing. You always knew where you stood with Jerry and he was always diplomatic. I have no other friends that are like Jerry. I will miss him but know that he did not suffer in his untimely death. He was always waiting for me to retire so we could go fishing. Rest in peace Jerry! God will welcome you to his home!
