Rhetta Nettles Obituary
Rhetta Delcambre Nettles, 79, of Covington, Louisiana, passed away on August 25, 2025, after courageously battling Parkinson's disease for more than twenty years. A strong-willed woman with a remarkable spirit, Rhetta faced her illness with the same determination and resilience that defined her life. Born and raised in Louisiana, Rhetta was one of six siblings. She later met and married the love of her life, Prentiss Burnette Nettles Jr., with whom she shared 56 years of marriage until his passing in 2022. Together they built a life rooted in love, devotion, and hard work, creating a home that welcomed family and friends with warmth. Rhetta was known as a great beauty, with movie-star good looks and impeccable style. But her elegance never made her delicate-she was as strong and capable as she was graceful. Rhetta never hesitated to roll up her sleeves and get to work, whether in her home, garden, or countless creative projects. If a skill could be researched and learned, Rhetta could master it-from becoming the family photographer to installing crown molding to creating professional-level landscaping. She had a resourceful and inventive nature, an innate eye for detail, and a passion for craftsmanship. She and Prentiss were always involved in a project, pouring their shared creativity and energy into making their home and the homes of loved ones more beautiful. Her greatest joy outside of her family was found in her garden. Gifted with a green thumb, she could coax beauty and abundance from the soil, spending long hours tending to her flowers and plants. Her garden was both her pride and sanctuary, a place where her family and friends felt her love and care in every bloom. Rhetta was also a remarkable cook and an exceptional baker. Her homemade desserts were highly coveted among family and friends, and she kept a running list in her head of everyone's favorite treat, making sure birthdays and special occasions were marked with something sweet and made with love. Above all, Rhetta was a devoted mother and grandmother. She raised her two children, Damon and Christen, with strength and care, and delighted in her role as grandmother to Lena, Camille, and Margaux. Her family was her proudest accomplishment, and her love will live on through them. Rhetta is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Prentiss Nettles; her parents Henry and Lena Delcambre; and several of her siblings; Mildred Butscher, Bertha Buras, Bernise Marchand, and Linda Mattingly. She is survived by her son, Damon Nettles and his wife Sara, and their daughter Lena; her daughter, Christen Nettles and her husband James Spokes, and their daughters Camille and Margaux; as well as her brother, Henry Delcambre Jr., nieces, nephews, and many friends who will cherish her memory. Though Rhetta is no longer with us, her strength, beauty, and love will remain forever in the hearts of those she touched. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Parkinson's Foundation in Rhetta's memory. Visitation will be held on Saturday, September 13, 2025 at E.J. Fielding Funeral Home, 2260 W. 21st Avenue, Covington, Louisiana from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM, followed by a brief graveside service in Pinecrest Memorial Gardens.
