Mary Duncan Obituary

A celebration of life for Mary Sullivan Duncan, 72, of Anniston, will be held on Saturday, October 19, 2024, at 2:30pm at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church with Pastor Carlton L. Phillips, officiating. Interment will be in Forestlawn Gardens. A public viewing will be held on Friday, October 18, 2024, from 3pm-7pm at the funeral home. Professional services entrusted to S.M. Goodson Funeral Home-Anniston. Mary Sullivan Duncan, a loving and supportive soul, graced this world with her presence on June 2, 1952, in Anniston, Alabama to the parentage of the late James and Mattie Jackson. She accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age. Her unwavering faith led her to unite with the Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in Anniston where she remained a devoted and faithful member until her health declined. Mary, affectionally known as "GeGe", received her education in the Anniston City School System and graduated from Cobb Avenue High School as a proud member of the Panther's Class of 1970. After high school, she chose to enter the workforce and eventually pursued a career at Anniston Sportswear where she worked for over 35 years. Mary served her community as a dedicated member of the Pilgrim Rest Eastern Star Chapter #372. Along life's journey, Mary met and married the love of her life, Albert Duncan and they were blessed with many years of marital bliss. Mary's passion for life was evident in her love for dancing, shopping, traveling, and watching game shows and dance competitions. She also cherished her connections with her classmates, forming lasting bonds that warmed her heart throughout her lifetime. Mary's zest for life was infectious. She was a giver and would help anybody. She was a fighter in every sense of the word, overcoming life's challenges with grace and determination. On Friday, October 11, 2024, Mary answered the Master's call and danced her way through the pearly gates to be reunited with her husband, Albert Duncan, parents, James and Mattie Jackson, brother, Samuel Smith, and sisters, Jewell Glover and Barbara Ann Robinson. Her loving memories will forever be cherished by her son, Antonio L. (Victoria) Sullivan; daughter, TaKeisha Carter; stepchildren, Midal "Big Daddy" Duncan and Tiffany Duncan; grandchildren, Shaunee (Maurice) Whatley, Quendesa (Steven) Carson, Aneishava Carter, Quensheay Sullivan, Antonio Sullivan, Jr., and Jacorey Lane; great-grandchildren, Jayla Whatley and Zion Whatley; brother, James Sullivan; sisters, Jean (John) Green, Annie Sullivan, and Terrie (Johnny) Teague; special cousin, Fannietta Dade; Godson, Jabari Cunningham; special friends, Patrick Dennis and Reather Stevens; in-laws, the Duncan family, and other family members and friends. Though Mary may no longer dance among us, her spirit will forever echo through the hearts of those she touched, reminding us to live joyfully and embrace each moment with love. Let us come together to celebrate the life of Mary Duncan and cherish the memories we shared with her. May she rest in eternal peace, dancing among the angels. S.M. I grew to be very fond of Mary in church several years ago. Mary friendship was special to me, we were in a play at church this is when our friendship started. When I think about the times we spent together, the best memories are those when we did nothing special. We simply talked, walked, lived.

To The Duncan / Sullivan Family: Condolences to the families during this time of grief and sorrow. Mary was a beautiful, gentle soul who had love in her heart for all those she met. Mary was my classmate (1970). When she left a part of my oral history left with her, each classmate carries a memory of that person that only they can tell. Mary may God bless you and welcome home, thy good and faithful servant. The clouds have run out of rain there is nothing but sunshine on the skyline. Take your rest from this earthly travel and enjoy your journey into paradise.

The family has my deepest sympathy. I met Mary when her sister, Jewel was married to my next door neighbor and friend, Robert Burt. We grew up in the same church which was Friendship Baptist Church. She always put God first even when she was in pain she talked about the goodness of God. RIHP Mary you will be missed.
