Arthur Feldman, M.D., a psychiatrist residing in Chapel Hill, N.C., died Wednesday, March 9, 2011, at home, with his wife by his side. He was 77 years old at the time of his death after a two year battle with brain cancer.
Dr. Feldman is survived by his wife of 49 years, Susan Roth Feldman; his daughter, Michelle Elise Feldman Dennis of Durham, N.C.; and his son, Robert Scott Feldman of Sudbury, Mass., as well as by his son-in-law, John Charles Dennis; his daughter-in-law, Gabriella Feldman; and his six grandchildren, Dylan, Juliet, Zachary, Alec, Austin and Lucy. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rose and Jack Feldman; and his younger brother, Edward Feldman.
Dr. Feldman was a native of N.J. and spent most of his professional career there. He attended Union College in Schenectady N.Y. and graduated from Albert Einstein Medical School in 1959. He was a member of the first graduating class of that medical school. He interned at the University of Chapel Hill in Chapel Hill, N.C. and then completed his residency in psychiatry at the State University of New York in Syracuse, N.Y., where he met his wife. He was a captain in the U.S. Air Force from 1963 to 1965, serving at Eglin Air Force Base in Fort Walton Beach, Fla. After leaving the Air Force, Dr. Feldman was a staff psychiatrist at Carrier Clinic, a private psychiatric hospital in Belle Meade, N.J. from 1965 to 1972. He then became the head of mental health services for Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ from 1972 to 1986. In 1986, he returned to Carrier Clinic until 1990. From 1990 to 1996, he provided clinical services on the adult inpatient unit at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of N.J. Behavioral Health Service in Piscataway, where he provided care for patients and taught medical students and residents. He retired in June 1996 to spend more time with his family and moved to North Carolina in 2008. Dr. Feldman immensely enjoyed his 36 year career in psychiatry. He had a great deal of empathy for those around him and had a sense of humor about the world. He shared his love of family, reading, knowledge, and hard work with his children and grandchildren and he especially enjoyed teaching mathematics to his grandchildren. His calm demeanor, positive attitude and logical approach to problems, both during his life and during his illness made him a role model to those who knew him well. He was well-respected and appreciated by his close family and friends.
A graveside funeral service was held at 12 noon Friday. March 11 at Judea Reform Congregation Cemetery, Jones Ferry Road in Carrboro. Officiating was Rabbi John Friedman. His family would like to thank the staff of both the Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke, as well as the Duke HomeCare Hospice. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to these facilities. The Feldman family is under the care of Howerton & Bryan Funeral Home, Durham, N.C.
