Benjamin Montenegro Obituary

Benjamin V. Montenegro

AGE: 70 • Toms River

Benjamin Victor Montenegro, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 24, 2012, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Born in Jersey City, he grew up in North Bergen. He was a graduate of Union Hill High School and earned his B.S. degree from Jersey City State College. On Aug. 15, 1965, he married his beloved wife, Janice Zingaro. They made their family home in Toms River, where Benjamin was employed as a science teacher at Toms River High School South for more than 30 years, touching the lives of many students as their teacher, coach and mentor. His greatest passion was his family to whom he gave his full attention, love and devotion. He loved attending his children's sporting events and continued that passion with his grandchildren until his passing. Always an old school coach, he never missed an opportunity to teach life lessons of hard work, effort and heart through competition in sports.

Benjamin was predeceased by his parents, Benjamin and Carmella (Ruocco) Montenegro. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Janice (Zingaro) Montenegro; his daughter, Lisa Rapp and her husband Thomas of Mendham; his daughter, Donna Sestito and her husband Carlo of Wall; his son, Ben Montenegro and his wife Maryann of Toms River; and his grandchildren, Tommy Rapp, Brian Rapp, Benjamin Montenegro, Sammy Sestito, Shawn Rapp, Michael Montenegro, Nicole Sestito, Jack Rapp, Joseph Sestito, and Marielle Montenegro. Also surviving are Benjamin's brothers, Peter Montenegro of Howell, and Richard Montenegro of Lakewood.

Family and friends are invited to attend his visitation from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, April 27, 2012 at Silverton Memorial Funeral Home, 2482 Church Road, Toms River. I had Mr. Montenegro at South for two school years during the mid seventies. He was a great teacher! We didn't goof off in his class, not because he was strict, but because he was such a good person you knew better. Toms River has lost one it's fathers.

Our deepest sympathy to the entire Montenegro family. Cherish your memories of all the great times you all had together. One of my favorites was when Mr. Montenegro would coach Lisa and Donna from the stands during a softball game in high school.....Dad always did know better:) Or when Benny was groomed in basketball and baseball over at South with Dad. How proud he was at the weddings. With all our thoughts and prayers for you all.....Kelly (Brooman) Rossetto and Shannon Rossetto
