HAGERTY JR.
AGE: 90 EDISON
Edward J. Hagerty Jr., 90, of Edison, died Saturday, July 3, 2010, at the Veterans Memorial Home at Menlo Park in Edison. Born Jan. 22, 1920 in Staten Island, N.Y., he resided in Edison since 1954 before moving to the Veterans Home in 2009. He served in the Army Air Corp during WW II as communication officer with the rank of captain of the 5th Bombardment Group Heavy. His campaigns were in the Southwest Pacific Area, Eastern Mandates, Bismarck Archipelago Borneo, Central Pacific Northern Solomons, New Guinea and Northern Philippines. He received many citations and decorations and was promoted to Major before his discharge in 1945. In civilian life, he was an electrical engineer at Western Electric in New York, Newark and Kearny, retiring in 1981 and was a member of the Pioneer Club at Western Electric. Ed was a longtime member of St. Matthew the Apostle Church in Edison and was an eucharistic minister.
He was predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Elizabeth M. Hagerty, in 2009; his granddaughter, Elizabeth Hagerty, in 1987; and daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Hagerty. in 2009. Surviving are twin daughters, Mary Ann Gerrity and husband Richard of Aberdeen, and Virginia Zavistoski and husband John of Edison; sons, James Hagerty of Philadelphia, Edward Hagerty and wife Marion of Medford, and Michael Hagerty of Edison; 12 grandchildren; and brother, Eugene Hagerty of South Plainfield.
Funeral services will begin at 8:45 a.m. Thursday, July 8 from Flynn and Son Funeral Home, 319 Amboy Ave., Metuchen, followed by a 9:30 a.m. Funeral Liturgy at St. Matthew the Apostle Church. Interment in Hillside Cemetery, Metuchen. Visiting hours Wednesday 2-4, 7-9pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to N.J. Memorial Veterans Home at Menlo Park, c/o Flynn and Son Funeral Home. Condolence messages to www.flynnfuneral.com.
