Gilbert Samuel Fell, Ph.D.

AGE: 80 • Atlantic Highlands

Gilbert Samuel Fell, Ph.D., 80, of Atlantic Highlands, beloved husband of Janet Fell died at home on Saturday, Feb. 18, 2012 after a long illness. Dr. Fell taught Philosophy and Religion Studies at Monmouth University for 35 years before retiring in 2001. He earned an A.B. degree in Sociology from Drew University; an S.T.B. from The Drew University School of Theology; an M.A. in Philosophy from Temple University and a Ph.D. in Philosophy/Religion from Temple University. He was an elder of The Methodist Church and served as pastor of the Crosswicks/Ellis Church; the Central Methodist Church in Atlantic City and the Harvey Memorial Methodist Church. After leaving the ministry his years at Monmouth University were spent in the joy of teaching, researching, writing and lecturing.

In addition to his wife, Janet, he is survived by his beloved daughters, Karen Powers, Linda Mertz, Nancy Hill; stepchildren, Gregory Hakim and Laura Nieves; sons-in-law, Gordon Powers, Douglas Hill, Luis Nieves and daughter-in-law, Lynne Hakim; grandchildren, Gordon Powers III, Melissa Mertz, Tavish and Kaitlin Hill, Jeremy, Joseph, Jonathan Nieves, Natalie and Vivienna Hakim; his sister, Eleanor Dennis and nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held on Friday, February 24, 2012 at the Red Bank United Methodist Church, Red Bank, NJ from 5 to 6 PM with a service to celebrate his life at 6 PM. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to The Fell Philosophy Endowed Scholarship at Monmouth University or The St. Barnabas Hospice and Palliative Care Center at Monmouth Medical Center.
