Helene. Where are you? Gone... That is all.
I'm so sad. You will live on inside me. Inside all of us who were touched by your living loving vibrant soul. Thank you for being part of our lives. I wish I had had chance to say goodbye. To say how much you meant to me.

I met Helene about 15 years ago when I was a grad student at Mass Art and am so grateful to have a couple of her photos. Especially at times like these, it's powerful to feel how much of a person lives on their artwork and I feel her presence very strongly in these images: one a still life with strong, dappled light; the other a landscape cloaked in mystery. I was in Boston just a few weeks ago and had the opportunity to visit her, not knowing it would be the last. I can't believe she's gone and I share in everyone's feeling of great loss.

My deepest sympathy to you who loved Helene most. I was at Smith with Helene. We lived in the same house, 36 Bedford Terrace and she fed all of us with her wonderful scones. She fed us with her compassion and open spirit as well.

Helene was a burst of energy to any room she entered. She loved working with students and was passionate about art, life, apples, good coffee, and nice places to sleep over. She was a credit to MassArt and touched lives all across the country. She will be missed.

Helene, my warm, loving, sweet, funny, caring, sharing, smart, creative friend. You have touched all the parts of my life. Today, I see you everywhere; when I look out at the trees and have another cup of tea and when I get dressed and see the clothes we shopped for so recently.
And even though it seemed we had an endless, non-stop conversation over all these last 20 years, telling each other practically everything, I still have so much to tell you!
I love you, I miss you already. Thank you always, always, for being my friend!

Helene was the strong, talented, positive, productive, giving, brave, beloved single woman many of us wish we would be in similar circumstances. She kept her struggles to herself, and was unstintingly generous with her gifts. She was a role model, living life with commitment and flair, opening doors of possibility to thousands whose aspirations she encouraged, and was an excellent friend to those lucky enough to be in her circle. She did right by life. Her memory is a blessing.

Grief can be so hard, but our special memories help us cope. Remembering you and your loved one today and always.

Helene, you cared so hard, like nothing I've seen before. You were always there and always offered great advice, you always knew how to pick the right gift just because you wanted to make someone smile. Those handmade books, homemade treats, sassy trinkets (because you knew I have the weirdest sense of humor). I'll always cherish our times in western mass-- the Brandt House, the book mill, drinks at Hope & Olive, apple orchards in VT. MassArt will miss you, Admissions will miss you, I'll miss you. I hope you're playing drums and rocking out in the big sky. -Gina
