Jeff Dement Obituary

Jeff R. Dement

Highlands - Jeff Dement, 54, passed on January 27, 2021. He was born on September 3, 1966 at St. Peter's Hospital in New Brunswick.

Jeff was a graduate of Christian Brothers Academy High School in 1984 and resided in Ocean Twp., Colts Neck, Neptune and Highlands.

Jeff was a member of the International Brotherhood of Union Ironworkers, local 480. After ironworking for 20 years, Jeff began transitioning to a career that merged with his passion. Jeff was a lifelong angler who loved nature, the ocean and being outdoors. He went back to college and graduated cum laude with a bachelor of science degree in Ecology and Natural Resources from Rutgers University-Cook College.

Upon receiving his degree, he began working at the American Littoral Society on Sandy Hook as the Fish Tagging Program Director. Jeff enjoyed his time there, especially educating young and old alike on fishing and the wonders of our natural environment. He also developed strong relationships with the community of all those who work on Sandy Hook.

Jeff loved music. He played the bass guitar and particularly enjoyed the Grateful Dead, who he followed on the road for a period of time.

Jeff was predeceased by his father, Donald Dement. He is survived by his two sons Kevin and Keith who he dearly loved, as well as his mother, Mary Mahoney, his brother Paul (Martha) Dement and his sister, Donna (Colin) Kenny.

A Memorial service will be private and is being arranged by the Woolley-Boglioli Funeral Home, Long Branch. I just learned of Jeff's passing and want to extend to his family and ALS colleagues my sincere condolences. I really enjoyed getting to know Jeff through his tagging work at ALS and will remember our fishy conversations fondly. I've set a goal to tag/release at least 100 fish this year in his honor and will make another donation to the Capt. Al Anderson fund, another big loss for us fishermen.

Jeff was a student of mine at CBA. He was the kind of guy whom one was happy to know not only as a student but as a friend. His heart was golden and his spirit undaunted.

Jeff and I were in touch thru messenger. We talked of the history of the Dement family. I told him I would gladly turn over whatever I had and he would have my blessings to carry on the research. I'm sorry I never got to meet him in person. So sorry he's gone from the family. Fondly his first cousin Carol Dement Coad.

Jeff and I worked together as Ironworkers for many years prior to his leaving to pursue a change in careers. Despite that we continued to keep in touch and he was a frequent visitor at my house. I considered him a close friend. I spoke to him just a couple days before his passing and when I got the news from a fellow ironworker I initially told him he had the wrong guy. How I wish that were the case. Jeff had an amazing sense of humor and we shared many laughs over the years. I admire the courage he had to take that leap of faith quitting iron working to follow his passion for the environment and nature where he was the happiest. I will miss his wit & the good times we shared. RIP Snake. Catch you on the other side. ~Biker Mike

Jeff and I had recently chatted about what we might do in retirement and how. He had brought up converted sprinter vans with full showers and traveling to where the fish were. I may try to fulfill his dream of doing that some day. And I'll have to pay attention to all things that Jeff taught me to pay attention to in nature, including the ID of the trees and plants and why they were there!
