Marybeth, Jim, Raymond, Sharon, John and Kevin:
Hugs to you.
My goodness. This is one of the times that I absolutely HATE living this far away....and so, belatedly, finding this out, I am now sending a message.
Here goes:
Mary Spanarkel (mother of my high school "touchstone", and good friend, Marybeth Spanarkel) was a grounding force, and a loving presence for so many of us in high school. We relied on her to scold us (occasionally) and love us (always).
She had a dichotomy about her. Razor-sharp in instinct, and insight, she also consistently exuded warmth and understanding. She blessed a little bunch of us with tolerance, when she didn't have to; she also demanded that we be good people/girls/women.
I liked her. A lot.
When I wasn't necessarily tolerant of my own mother ( or most adults), it is so telling that Mary was one of those unique "adults" around whom I felt comfortable and accepted. I was not alone in that.
So did most of our friends. She was a wonderful, accepting, smart, giving, WARM presence.
You are, all, blessed to have had her as your Mom. I was always envious of that (in the most loving way). I know you will miss her.
With empathy, and much love,
Kathleen Norton-Schock (Kathy Norton)

Mary and my mom Hilda became best of friends this summer at Meridian in Wall. They were inseparable. We shared so many jersey City stories and talked and talked. She beamed with pride when we talked about about family and friends. They stayed in touch after Jim brought her home. We will miss her. May the passage of time ease your sorrow and surround you with comforting memories. Harry Lerner and Mom Hilda

"Ma Spa" was one of my biggest fans as a baseball player growing up, as she was perhaps the only person to see every single one of her son John's and my games in the Greenville Babe Ruth Baseball league...but more importantly, she was a true Jersey City icon, a beloved character who was adored by everyone who knew her...I was very fortunate to know her for more than 30 years...and she has her incredible family to live on as a legacy...I hope God is ready for a few bottles of the "Ma Spa" sauce...All my best

"Bloody Mary" - her memory will live on in the laughter, smiles and hilarity that I remember whenever I was in her presence! What a woman! One of the greatest laughs I've ever heard. Hold your heads high, Spanarkels! Each and every one of you made her proud!
Love and sympathy from Mary Costello.
