Nicholas Sciarappa Obituary

Nicholas Vincent Sciarappa

Manasquan - Nicholas V. Sciarappa, 89, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 28, 2021 at Care One at Wall. Born and raised in North Bergen, New Jersey, Nicholas eventually moved to Bricktown then spent the entirety of his married life in Manasquan. Nick was a graduate of Valley Forge Military Academy, then went on to Villanova University where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. After college, he was commissioned an officer in the United States Marine Corps. He served briefly and then began his career in education, while simultaneously earning a Master's Degree in Educational Administration from Rutger's University. Nick spent his entire 35-year career as an educator in the Jackson Township schools. He began as a sixth-grade teacher, then became Principal of Switlik Elementary School, and rounded out his career as assistant superintendent. Nick retired in 1993.

Nick's second job, one that he surely enjoyed, was at the Spring Lake Bath and Tennis Club where he worked every summer as a bartender, and ultimately became the dining room manager there. He was often asked by members to work their private parties and he worked many years as the bartender in a private box at Giants Stadium. Nick was known for his dapper style of dress and was often seen driving his blue BMW around the shore towns or snoozing at the inlet.

Over the years, Nick served two terms on the Manasquan Board of Education, bringing his experience and concern for students to his hometown district. While off from school or the Bath and Tennis, Nick enjoyed golf and was proud of his four holes-in-one. He loved the occasional trip down to Atlantic City and enjoyed walking the Spring Lake boardwalk. Nick was loved by his family and was affectionately known by his grandchildren as Bumpy.

Nick was predeceased by his parents, Vincent and Caroline Sciarappa; his son, Stephen Sciarappa in 1981; and by his brother, John Sciarappa. Surviving is his loving wife of 59 years, Claire Tassini Sciarappa; daughters, Lorette Sciarappa, MD and her husband, Jim Schmieder; Chrissy Rice and her husband, Chris; and Cari Kline and her husband, Jeff, all of Manasquan. Nick is also survived by ten grandchildren: Ellie, Stephen and Alex Schmieder, Matthew, Abby, Nick and Tommy Rice and Madeline, Delia and Miles Kline.

Visiting will be on Friday from 4-7pm at the O'Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Hwy 35, Wall. A Funeral Mass will be offered 10am on Saturday at St. Denis RC Church, Manasquan. Final interment will be held privately. Donations may be made in his name to either Manasquan Boy Scout Troop 59 C/O 285 Cedar Ave, Manasquan NJ 08736, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis TN 38105 or St. Denis RC Church, 90 Union Ln Manasquan NJ 08736. To the Sciarappa family,
Remembering your dear husband, father & grandfather.
"Mr. Sciarappa" was my 6th grade teacher in 1958, fresh out of the Marine Corp.
He remains in my memory all these years as such a special teacher, full of energy, making school so interesting and memorable.
May his memory be blessed always.

I have by chance just come across this message on FB...
"Mr." Sciarappa was my 7th grade teacher the first year he taught at Switlik Elementary School, Jackson, NJ...1958-59. I have remembered him all these many years as a wonderful teacher and person, definitely with positive influence on his students. He and Claire also attended our wedding in January 1971 in Bricktown. Upon seeing your family photo from June 2020, I searched thru my albums and found the photo of Nicholas and Claire from that day. It was truly an honor having them as our guests. Heartfelt condolences to your family on the loss of a very special man who will be remembered always for his respect for his students. Nick was acquainted with my father, Morris Monesson thru the Board of Education at Switlik. My father has also passed away this year on March 16, 2021 at age 95. May they Rest In Peace, Forever Remembered.

To the entire Sciarappa family. We are so sorry for your loss. During our years as neighbors, Nick always gave us a big smile and a wave whenever we went past the house. I will forever remember him sitting on the front porch. We are praying that loving memories will bring comfort.

I am so sorry to hear about Nick. We worked together in the dining room at the B&T and had many laughs! He was the best to work with. I was walking down ocean Ave and saw a blue BMW and said that will always be called Nick´s car no matter how many years later. Your family is in my prayers.
