ROBERT E. MATAKEVICH
AGE: 74 TOMS RIVER
Robert E. Matakevich, 74, of Toms River, died Tuesday, Oct. 14, at Community Medical Center, Toms River. Born in Blakeslee, Pa., he lived in Scranton, Pa., then in Elizabeth for 10 years before moving to Toms River 38 years ago. Robert first worked at the Herald Tribune in New York City, then at the New York Times for several years. He then worked in the Circulation Dept. of the Newark Star Ledger for 30 years, retiring in 1998. He was a member of the ITU (International Typographical Union), and the Local Mailers Union. Mr. Matakevich was a parishioner of St. Justin's Roman Catholic Church, Toms River, and served in the U.S. Army. He was an avid freshwater fisherman and was a fan of the New York Mets and Jets.
Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Ann T. Cherundolo Matakevich; two daughters and sons-in-law, Pamela and Thomas Powers of East Greenwich, R.I., and Dr. Barbara Matakevich and Dr. Paul Frascella of Carmel, Ind.; a brother, Paul Matakevich of Jessup, Pa.; a sister, Barbara Treanor of Montclair; and five grandchildren, Jenna Powers, Daniel Frascella, Thomas Powers Jr., Kiley Powers, and James Frascella.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Timothy E. Ryan Home for Funerals, 995 Fischer Blvd., Toms River. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Justin's R.C. Church, Toms River. Burial to follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Toms River.
