Robert Underhill Obituary

Robert S. Underhill

AGE: 58 • Wall

Robert S. Underhill, 58, of Wall, was born June 21, 1955 in Point Pleasant and passed at home on Saturday, Aug. 17, 2013 after a brave and stoic 2 year battle with cancer. Bob grew up in Brielle, NJ and attended Manasquan High School then went on to receive his Criminal Justice degree from Northeastern University in Boston. From there he earned his Law Degree from Temple University in Philadelphia and went on to practice law for thirty years, spending the last 17 with the firm Greenbaum, Rowe, Smith and Davis in Woodbridge, NJ. Bob had many interests, all of which he put his heart and soul into. He was an Eagle Scout, avid sailor on the Manasquan River where he was the Commodore of the Manasquan River Yacht Club. He loved soccer whether participating or officiating or coaching his boys. Anything his sons Bobby, John and Patrick did, he was there to support them wholeheartedly, be it wrestling, soccer or music. His Sunday afternoons were always spent at U.J.'s garage cheering on his beloved Jets with the "boys." As a member of the Pipes and Drums of the Jersey Shore he performed regularly as the bass drummer and was a proud member of the Friendly Sons of the Shillelagh Club. Music and beer were his passion and he was glad to share his expertise with anyone and everyone!

Whether you knew him as Goob, Dad, Pop, Bob, Uncle Goober or even as a casual friend, no one will ever forget him and he will be sorely missed. He is predeceased by his father, Henry Melvin Underhill Jr. He is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Mary Lou Ivins Underhill; his sons, Patrick, John, and Robert, his daughter-in-law, Maryanne Underhill who live in Brick with their children, Margaret and Charlotte; his mother, Matilda Robcke Underhill and mother-in-law, Joan Ivins; his brother and sister-in-law, Henry and Deborah Underhill; his sister, Nancy Richardson; his sister and brother-in-law, Sue and Jimmy Hindman, and his many nieces and nephews, cousins and his many friends.

Services will be held on Saturday, August 24th from 10am-2pm at Orender Family Home for Funerals, 2643 Old Bridge Road, Manasquan. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Carmie Brady Foundation, PO Box 91, Manasquan, NJ 08736, a charity close to the family's heart. I knew Bob professionally, we represented clients adverse to one another. He was a strong creative advocate, unfailingly prepared, knowledgeable and collegial; a pleasure to deal with. My sincere condolences to his family and friends.

Bob was the first person I met in the band. He was so warm and welcoming on that first night. He was a gentlemen and a scholar. I hope that all your fun memories will sustain you through this sad time. God Bless.

I worked with Bob at GRS since the day he joined the firm back in 1996. He was very involved with my accounting dept. and I speak for all of the "girls" in there when I say that he will be terribly missed. He was always smiling, always a gentleman and by far one of our favorite attorneys.

Uncle Bob's passing is a devastating loss. My heart breaks for the entire Underhill family, friends, and people whose lives were touched by Goob. There was never anyone as cool as my Uncle Bob. He was the one that orchestrated family get-togethers and took all the amazing photos to document it.

I can remember many nights of watching in awe as he interacted with his sons, by playing music, by joining whatever it was they were into, or by coaching and supporting them. He was the ultimate definition of a devoted dad. He was a truly a shining example to all that knew him.

I know that this loss will be undefinable to his boys and family- but I feel confident that his legacy will continue to shine through all the amazing things and people he has touched over the years. Boys, remember, your dad gave you the best tools that a father could give- his love for you was extraordinary.

Aunt Lou, my heart breaks for you. Please lean on the people that love you. You will always be in someone's prayers. You are surrounded by love.

To my mom (Nancy) and Uncle Henry- remember the good, funny and adventurous times with your little brother. Let the memories overtake the void. I love you both and have you in my heart always.

I love you Uncle Bob. Thank you for being someone that I always looked up to (and will continue to). Thank you for embracing courage and love. You will be missed more than words will convey. We love you.

Your niece Kelle
