(Asbury Park Press)

STEVEN NATHANIEL SPRAGUE
AGE: 28 TOMS RIVER
Steven Nathaniel Sprague, 28, of Toms River, passed away Thursday, Oct. 16. Steven was born in Toms River and lived here most of his life. He attended Whiting School in Manchester, West Dover Elementary School, Toms River Intermediate North, and graduated from Toms River High School South in 1998. Steven was a championship swimmer in high school and worked as a lifeguard at Ortley Beach. After high school, he briefly attended Delaware Valley College in Pennsylvania, majoring in Landscape Design. For many years, Steven was the owner/operator of Steven N. Sprague Landscaping. He was passionate about working outdoors and always loved a good day of hard work. At the age of 12, he started his landscaping company. He used his bicycle, pulling his lawn mower and landscaping equipment on a trailer that he had built himself. Steven loved his family, he was so proud of his home, and adored his childhood sweetheart, Nicole, whom he married in 2006 after a courtship of more than ten years. Steven, an exceedingly kind person, was always appreciative of life's simple pleasures. He was known for his magnificent blue eyes, his infectious smile - and, of course, his frank and truthful responses to the irony and humor in life.
Steven is survived by his wife, Nicole Hibbs Sprague; and their seven-month-old daughter, Abigail Olivia, who was the light of his world. He is also survived by his father, Steven R. Sprague; his mother and stepfather, Maureen and Bruce Madden; his adoring sister, Taylor Madden; his loving sister and brother-in-law, Casey and Kevin Daniel; and his maternal grandmother, Violet G. Feeney. He was loved by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, James and Susan Hibbs; his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Jamie and Brett Hardie, and Jacki and Kevin Bernick; and his grandmother-in-law, Estelle Linkenhoker. He is also survived by many, many aunts, uncles, cousins, and adoring friends. Steven also loved his dogs, and he and Nicole are the proud owners of Roxi, Rumi and Rali and the late Murphy.
The family will welcome relatives and friends and those who loved Steven from 1 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Anderson and Campbell Funeral Home, 703 Main St., Toms River. A Mass to celebrate Steve's life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph's Church, Hooper Avenue, Toms River. In lieu of flowers, Abby's grandparents, Maureen, Bruce, Jim, Sue, and Steve are asking that donations be made to the Abigail Sprague Scholarship Fund and mailed to 74 Morgan Road, Toms River, NJ 08755.

Dear Nicole and Family

We're so sorry to hear of the loss of Steve and since we knew him professionally, we wanted to offer our prayers and thoughts to all of you.
A few years ago, we saw Steve's truck and called on him to do our landscaping and pave our front path. Each time we see the beautiful and meticulous work he did, we'll think of him. He was a kind person and my husband and I are saddened by his passing.
May God bless all of you.

I am honored to have known and laughed with Steve for 4 years at TRHSS. We had some really good times and I have some really great memories. His eyes will always shine in my memory.

Dear Maureen, Bruce, Nicole and family,
our hearts ache for all of you. We never got to know Steve as a man personally, but through Genny, a more than proud and loving grandma, we always heard stories about his life. May knowing that many people out there are thinking about you, and grieving with you, help you a little bit during this very painful time.
In deep sorrow, Esther and Rolf Gebel (Waynesboro, VA)

The News of Steven’s death has brought about great sorrow and pain to your family and also to ours. Two years ago I stood on the Altar and pronounced you man and wife, never knowing that his life would be cut so short. We have a lot of memories of Steve from the time you, Joanne and I spent together in all the planning. We will cherish those moments together and keep his spirit alive in our hearts. We pray that those we love remain with us for love itself lives on and the cherish memories will never fade because a love one is gone. May God’s peace get you and your family through this most difficult time.

God Bless you, Deacon Dave & Joanne Shapiro

Nikki and Family,
We are so sorry that such a terrible thing is happening to such terrific people. Hopefully all the memories of Steve will keep you strong, even laughing, forever. Times like the canoe trip("don't tip Steve he's got the sandwhiches!", the bahamas, (especially how mad he was at the airport-ps still have of picture of that one) to just going to dinner and laughing with you guys....He always let Eddie "play" on his machines, and I think he's the only one who ever liked our crazy dog...he is the best guy we've ever known, and we are proud to have had him as a part of our lives. We will always be here for you, for anything anytime... We love you!

So sorry you have to endure such a loss. We know you and Steve were best friends; we hope that your memories of your life together and your beautiful daughter help keep you strong. My heart aches for all of Steve's loved ones. I'm holding on to the very happy memories that I have shared with Steve: the BEACH, goofing off in class (earth science & biology), college visits, swim meets, homecomings & proms, superlative photo "Nicest Eyes", and many, many more. May your memories comfort you in your time of sorrow!
