AGE: 75 WHO WAS BORN IN LONG BRANCH
Warren Smock Hance, 75, passed away after a long illness early Thursday morning, Feb. 26, 2009, at his home in Grantham, N.H. He was born April 4, 1933 in Long Branch and was the son of Winfield Hance and Janette Smock Kidde. Warren, "Skip" to his many friends and family graduated from The Lawrenceville School, Lawrenceville in 1951 and Dartmouth College, Hanover, N.H. in 1955. On Dec. 1, 1956, he was married to Alice "Lou" Fridlund in Englewood. Skip and Lou were happily married for 52 years. Skip received his commission as second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in Korea and New Mexico. After receiving a master's degree from Columbia University, he taught at the Buffalo (NY) Seminary and then became chair of the history department at Miss Porter's School in Farmington, Conn. From 1975 to 1983, he was headmaster at Miss Porter's. His commitment to education continued as director of development and alumni relations at Harvard Law School. He returned to Dartmouth in 1986 to serve as vice president for development and alumni affairs until his retirement in 1993. Throughout his life, he actively supported the communities where he lived, most recently as chair and board member of the Hospice of the Upper Valley (now the Visiting Nurse Association & Hospice of Vermont and New Hampshire). Skip will be remembered by all who knew him for his wonderful sense of humor, his great love for the people and places of the Upper Valley, and his thoughtful devotion to friends and family. If there is a place that embodies these qualities, it is surely his former home near Upper Baker Pond and Mt. Moosilauke, where Skip and Lou tended to spectacular gardens, graciously entertained, and daily absorbed the beauty and tranquility of the north country.
In addition to his wife, Skip is survived by his two children and their spouses, Allen St. John Hance and Amanda Anderson of Baltimore, Md., and Lindsay Hance Kosnik and Christopher Kosnik of Silver Spring, Md.; his five grandchildren, Jackson and Emily Hance and Connor, Ian and Luke Kosnik; and his sister and brother, Judy Castles of Newton, and Charles Hance of Potterville.
The time and place of a memorial service will be announced at a future date. Gifts in his memory may be sent to the Visiting Nurse Association & Hospice of VT and NH, White River Junction, VT or to a charity of one's choice. Arrangements are by Chadwick Funeral Service, New London, N.H.

Skip lived across the street from us when we were growing up on the Jersey shore and, as a friend of my brother Bob, was simply a member of our family. I remember the neighborhood boys, Skip included, sprawled across my brothers bed, forbidding my entry into this hallowed chamber - I, the 10-years-younger little sister. On into college years, I remember vacation get-togethers, the "Brothers," Charity Balls, and Lou, Betts and the wedding years. After many years, in the 80's we found each other again when Tom and I moved to NH and Skip and Lou returned to Dartmouth. Again, we shared wonderful evenings in Orford, Claremont and lovely restaurants inbetween. Tom and I send our deepest love to you, Lou, Allen and Lindsay.

Some of my fondest years of my lifetime were the 2 years I spent at Miss Porter's as an Assistant House Director in Ward and then "promoted" to a House Director in Colony, the senior dorm '79-'81. I believe it was the one and only time in the history of Porter's that 2 single women (myself and my roommate) were assigned to a Senior Dorm. That is the faith that Skip Hance, a person whom I have and always will admire, had in me. I'll never forget his words to me - "if anyone can say no, it's Joan". The irony in his passing this past week is that I was at Porter's watching the Founders Swim Meet and talking with a Porter's parent who spent countless hours in our apartment as a Senior and sharing my story of Skip Hance. I am saddened by his loss and my deepest sympathy goes out to his wonderful wife, Lou, and his family.

I was a house parent at Miss Porter's School for 4 years while Skip was Headmaster. Our daughter, Katie, was born while we were there and she always delighted in going into Skip's office to look at (and touch) his frog collection.I was also fortunate to see Skip a few years ago and to tour the lovely gardens at the family home in New Hampshire. I send my condolences to Lou and her family.
