AGE: 85 • Manchester

William J. Bennes Jr. 85 of Manchester died Monday, May 21, at home. He was employed for 12 years as a wireman technician for the Electro Impulse Company, Neptune before retiring in 1989. He was a Navy veteran of World War II serving aboard the USS DD Theodore E. Chandler, and was a Life Member of the VFW Post #10061, Lakehurst. He also belonged to the DAV Chapter 24, Toms River, and the Destroyer Escort Sailors Association. He was a communicant of St. John's Church, Lakehurst, serving on both the Parish Council and as Past President of the Holy Name Society. He also served the church as an usher, lector and Eucharistic Minister. He was a Life Member of the Manchester Volunteer Fire Company #1, where he served as Treasurer for 12 years, and the Manchester First Aid Auxiliary. He belonged to the Knights of Columbus, Council #348, Brick, Council# 10022, Leisure Knoll, Manchester and the 4th Degree Knights, John D. McMahon Assembly 1926. Born in Newark, he lived in Bloomfield for 41years , and in Eatontown for 5 years before moving to Manchester in 1976. He is predeceased by 2 wives, Virginia Gorman Bennes in 1969, and Ann McCabe Bennes in 2000. Surviving is his wife, Dolores Pasquale Bennes, 2 sons, and their wives, William J. III and Barbara Bennes of Seaside Heights, and Edward and Paula Bennes of St Marys, GA ,2 daughters and a son in law, Kathleen and Marc DeBord of Houston, TX and Louise A. Bennes of Toms River. Also surviving are 9 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be Wednesday from 2-4 & 7-9 pm at the Oliverie Funeral Home, 2925 Ridgeway Road, Manchester. Funeral Liturgy will be Thursday at 11:00 am at St. John's Church, Lakehurst with interment to follow at the Brigadier Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Arneytown. I am so sorry for your loss Luanne Mr.Bennes was always so sweet to me and always made me laugh. It was a joy to have known him. I will keep you in my prayers Lu. God bless you Mr. Bennes thank you for making me laugh when it was a tough day at CVS.
