I read a post on social media today asking who my favorite teacher from high school was. Although this was about 25 years ago, Mr Garrick was my favorite. I caught him at the tail end of his teaching career, but he left a lasting mark on me concerning united states history and politics. Rest in peace Mr Garrick.

I always enjoyed the salt water candy treats he would share with the class. Rest in peace, Mr. Garrick.

We first met and befriended Howard and Carol Garrick and family when transferred to Beale Air Force Base, CA in August 1979. The Garrick family was already at Beale when we arrived and our initial meeting was at the LDS Church located on the east side of Marysville, California. During our five year assignment at Beale our on-base residence was just up the hill on Altamonte Drive from their residential quarters situated along the perimeter road in the west portion of the officer housing area close to the creek which coursed along that western boundary. Howard was assigned as the Executive Officer at the 100th Air Refueling Wing Headquarters which supported the 9th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing flying the SR-71 "Blackbird" high altitude super-sonic airplane with mid-air refueling capability for its world-wide photo-reconnaissance missions. I interacted with Howard regularly while assigned as Chief of Base Operations and Training Division, Deputy Base Commander, and as Chief of the Base Procurement Division. He was thoroughly professional, and perfectly organized at the weekly Wing Commander's staff meetings gracefully coordinating all the staff functions. We experienced many delightful family and social occasions with the Garricks, both at Church and at a variety of military affairs. Retirement from the Air Force took us in different directions, but we remained aware of each other, and now some 40 years have passed into history.
We offer humble prayers for Howard and all the family, and continue to have many wonderful memories and enduring gratitude for the honor of having known and been associated in the long ago past.
