Mark Smith Obituary

Mark Smith passed away on May 30, 2025. Mark was born October 30, 1964, in Marysville, CA, and attended Marysville schools.

He played baseball, hunted, fished, and early on, began frequent trips to the North Coast to fish and dive for abalone with his parents and brother, Matt.

He loved working alongside his grandfather, Archie, helping with the dairy and working on the ranch and often had great stories about the times he spent growing up with his many Sperbeck cousins.

Mark's talents as a dedicated Lineman and Troubleman for over 35 years, beginning with PG&E, allowed him to travel and work in places he loved with BCHydro and NVEnergy.

He was fearless and took on any challenge with gusto, loving every minute. He seized on any opportunity for hard, physical, rewarding work, spending long days in the yard, taking down trees on Laurellen Road, building fences, working on tractors, and taking on projects for family, friends and neighbors.

He was a talented and creative welder, had a green thumb, and was a master raconteur. Mark's favorite place to be was on his boat, at the ocean, fishing and crabbing with his family.

Mark increasingly gave his time to St. Isidore Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, helping with events and ushering at Sunday Mass.

He enjoyed visiting various missions, parishes and cathedrals with Maria on their many trips along the Pacific coast from San Diego, CA, to British Columbia, to the Southeast, from Key West, FL, to Charleston, SC. Most of all, Mark loved his family and was the most generous man in all ways possible.

Beloved husband of, Maria; dedicated Dad to, Nicholas (Amanda), Samantha (Robby), and Benjamin (Cheyenne); devoted Papa to, Sophia, Emmalyn, Luke, and Lily; and devoted son to, Sally.

Mark was a cherished father-in-law, brother-in-law, son-in-law, uncle, cousin, nephew, friend, neighbor and coworker.

He has found eternal peace alongside his brother, Matt; his father Jerry; his maternal and paternal grandparents; his uncles, Mike and Bill Sperbeck; aunts, Sandy and Sharon; and his beloved English Mastiff, Cali.

A private Mass of Christian Burial and graveside service was previously attended by family and close friends.

Please consider making a donation in Mark's memory to St. Isidore Catholic Church Knights of Columbus, 222 Clark Ave. Yuba City, CA 95991, or San Junipero Serra Friary at 1631 62nd Ave Oakland, CA 94621, or donate online.

Mark was one of the older linemen I looked up to during my younger days at PG&E. I still tell the younger generation of linemen stories about Mark Smith. He was a legend! RIP Smitty!

A treasured brother and someone I looked up to all my life. Someone who myself and others could rely on any time. A good man. You will be missed terribly brother. I know you are in a better place now and I hope to see you again.

I will always love my "favorite son-in-law," Mark. He was one of the most considerate, generous, loving, persons I have ever known. I really miss him. Not for long, though, as we will be together again in Heaven, our eternal home.
