John was born September 18, 1948, son of Jack and Ruth (Pollock) Sullivan in Ardmore. He attended school in Ardmore, graduating from Ardmore High School in 1966, and continuing his education at Westminster College, serving as the president of SAE fraternity, and graduating with a bachelor's degree in economics. John enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1970 to 1978, where he was promoted to the rank of captain.
In 1971, John became employed by the Insurance Company of North America, acting as a Casualty Underwriter, which allowed him to learn the insurance trade. In 1974, he joined the family business, the Sullivan Insurance Agency. John's strong enthusiasm for business helped him to become instrumental in the development of two different banks in Southern Oklahoma, notably the First Community Bank of Lone Grove, where he served as a Board Director and President, and what is now the American Nation Bank. Later on, he served as Vice President of Clifton Planning, Inc. from 2011 to 2015.
John's professional life included serving on several organizations including Ardmore Rotary International, Ardmore Chamber of Commerce, Ardmore Planning Commission, Ardmore Animal Care, Ardmore Tree Board, Oak Hall School, Crime Stoppers and HUD. John was also a long-time member of the Elks lodge.
In the Insurance Industry, he served as a President of the Independent Insurance Agents of Ardmore, a president of the Associated Risk Managers, Associated Risk Managers agent of the year, a finance/bond consultant for Oklahoma Aerospace Contracting Assistance Center, and Central Oklahoma CPCU Chapter, winning their insurance service Award. John also made time for recreation and truly enjoyed his friends and family and fellowship with all.
In earlier days he was a player on the Men's Softball Team, The Mullets, and was an inspiration to keep the team playing. He was a strong supporter and proponent of Ardmore building a new softball complex and was extremely proud his team, the Mullets, could play the first game under the lights at the new stadium, competing against the OG&E team.
