Dona Kirby Obituary

Dona Kirby

Dona Kirby died July 28, 2015. She was a devoted mother of five sons and later served as matriarch to a large extended Sioux Falls family.

Dona was born in Sioux Falls on November 30, 1926 to Laird and Maretta Holmes. She attended Washington High School, where she was a member of the homecoming court and was described in the school newsletter as, "a tall, blue-eyed brunette with a contagious giggle." Shortly after graduation, she married Joe Kirby on June 15, 1944.

Dona was extraordinarily devoted to her family. She was intelligent, well informed, and fostered a family environment that placed an emphasis on knowledge and intellect. The family yard served as a central neighborhood gathering spot nearly seven days a week for impromptu sporting events involving her sons. Dona always went out of her way to make everyone feel welcome, providing refreshments to the hungry and thirsty participants. Her sons were frequently told, "You have the nicest mom!"

She was a cat lover. There was always at least one cat in the household, often many more. Her children can recall knowing at least a couple dozen during their years at home.

Dona loved to bake. Her cakes, éclairs and most of all her chocolate chip cookies are legendary within the family.

Dona dedicated time as a community volunteer. She served as a driver for senior citizens and was active in the Meals on Wheels program.

In retirement, Dona and Joe divided their time between California and South Dakota. She was an involved and active grandmother and is fondly remembered by each of her grandchildren. Her oldest grandkids spent a great deal of time at her house during their childhood years, and they especially enjoyed their frequent overnight stays.

Dona was preceded in death by her husband and her sister. She is survived by her five sons Dan (Arlene), Joe P. (Jennifer), Kevin (Peggy), Pat (Jill) and Mike, 13 grandkids, 7 great grandkids. She will be missed by her family and friends.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society; 3720 E. Benson Road; Sioux Falls, SD 57104.

From my first memories of Dona over 50 years ago, she was always truly a person of grace. She raised 5 great sons & gave each of them the freedom & the guidance to make their way through life. Job well done, Dona!

I only got to know Dona very well in the last 1 1/2 years. She was a very special lady! We would have long phone conversations in the past year. She meant a lot to me and both my parents. My deepest sympathy to her family...
