Nancy, Liz, Nick, Victoria and Alex,
Lori and I are so sorry for your loss. Ed was a skilled and caring physician, a wonderful teacher and mentor and a true gentleman. I was privileged to have been his friend and colleague. He taught me much. You hear people talk of physicians and say "his patients love him" or "his students love him". But the thing about Ed Zawada is that he loved them back. He truly cared. He never judged a patient and he never gave up on a patient. For that I will always hold him in high esteem.

Hi Nancy,
Arlene and I were saddened when we heard that Ed had passed away.
I remember all those Wednesday afternoons when we played golf at Westward Ho Country Club. We remember the times at your home as our daughter was friends with Victoria. Our son Ryan has many great memories of working with the rats in the experimental lab at the Va.
Dr. Ed was a great inspiration and a fun guy to be around. We will always cherish those memories.
Your friends,
Doyle and Arlene Stern

Dear Mrs. Zawada and family. I am so sorry to hear about Dr. Zawada's passing. I had the opportunity to work closely with him on several projects throughout the years, both at Sanford and Avera. I always admired his dedication to patients, his intellect, his quick wit and his twinkling eyes that accompanied a great smile. He approached medicine and life with enthusiasm and always could find the positives in any situation. Like so many others in the health care community, I am a better provider due to his influence.

To the Family of Dr Ed Zawada,
My sympathy for your recent loss. Dr Z was a medical mentor second to none. I can quote many things attributed to Dr Zawada, from my time working at the VA Hospital on dialysis research, to doing subsequent training in Sioux Falls. A dry wittiness with an easy going approach meant so much to his patients. He was one of my first exposures to a style of medical care I can only attempt to repeat. Under all this professorial acumen was a charmingly warm and delightful person. Please understand that his impacts on the personal and professional development of a generation of students was immense. I was lucky enough to be one of them.
Thanks Nancy and Zawada family; if your husband, father and grandpa was gone at work- he was blessing the rest of us with his presence. May God bless and hold you in the palm of his hand

Dear Mrs. Zawada and family,
Our deepest sympathy to you all on your loss of Dr. Zawada. He was one of my favorite medical attendings when he was at McKennan back in the 1990's. I learned so much from him besides just Nephrology and critical care medicine. He also taught us how to be a compassionate physician, and to think critically about each patient and how to best treat them. What an amazing and gifted teacher he was!
Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.
Sincerely,
Carrie J. Carlson and family

I worked with Dr. Zawada at the VA in Sioux Falls, SD as a dialysis nurse and also assisted with his hypertension research. He was also my father's physician. I always enjoyed working with him. He was such a kind and caring man. He had great expertise and I learned much from him. Nancy and family, sending my deepest sympathies. May you feel God's comforting and loving Arms surrounding you. May you find strength in God's Promise of eternal life, that you will see him again one day. You are all in my heart and prayers.

Dr. Zawada was my colleague, my research investigator, my neighbor, both my parent’s doctor through difficult illnesses, and mostly a priceless family friend. I am very sad. Thinking of you Nancy and family and for all who lost this great human.
