George T. McDowell

George McDowell, 80, of Sioux Falls, died Friday, November 4, 2016 in Sioux Falls.

George Thomas McDowell was born March 4, 1936 at Iowa City, IA to William and Mary McDowell. He grew up in the Wapello, IA area where he received his education, graduating from Wapello High School in 1954. He attended Burlington, IA Community College for 2 years.

He enlisted in the US Air Force in 1956 and later entered the US Army in 1959. He was united in marriage with Bonnie Lou Ehlers on March 9, 1962 in Chicago, IL. George served in Korea and did two tours in Viet Nam. He also served several bases in the United States and served for 3 years in Europe. He retired from the Army in 1976 at Fort Hood, TX. Upon his retirement, the couple moved to Sioux Falls where George worked at Handy Man, and for Robson Hardware, retiring in 1996.

In his spare time, he and Bonnie enjoyed travelling to see America.

In his later years, George was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease which required continual care from some very wonderful family and caregivers.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife of 54 years, Bonnie, of Sioux Falls; three children, Eric (Gabrielle Smith) McDowell of Kirkland, WA, Milo (Jodi) McDowell of Poulsbo, WA and Shannon (Gary) Klarenbeek of Sioux Falls, SD; and 5 grandchildren, Elise Klarenbeek, Colin, Ryan, Jacob and Zachary McDowell.

George was preceded in death by his parents and 8 siblings, Charles, Glen, Paul, Bill, James, Mary Louise, Rena and Helen.

Private memorial services will be held.
